Music Monday — What are you listening to? (Album Artwork Edition)

cover image source: Giphy

Last week, we got into favorite album titles, this week I wanna continue that trend, but with album artwork. Album artwork arguably began with recorded albums... it was a way for artists to attach visuals to their work. Sometimes, this was done in a straightforward way, just showing the face of the artist, perhaps holding their instruments and smiling while looking into the camera. But, as time has gone on, things have gotten much more creative... sometimes the musician will partner with an artist to formulate something that they feel fits the cohesive aesthetic of the album and often the musician is nowhere in sight! As we move into an era where the album is less important and everything is more digital, sometimes individual images get created for each song — occasionally a thread kinda ties them all together. In any case, I wanna hear see y'all's favorite album artwork; if it's not a traditional album but rather artwork related to an artist, that's totally fine too. Of course, as always, feel free to step outside the suggested theme and share something else. By the way, please steer clear of artwork that may violate our guidelines... if you want to show something that you think is borderline inappropriate, then please put a warning in your message and just link to the photo elsewhere!

The album cover for "The Velvet Underground & Nico" ... it's a drawing of a very ripe banana by Andy Warhol. The cover has been animated by a GIF artist and we can see the peel being peeled off to reveal a naked banana. According to Wikipedia, early copies of the album invited the owner to "Peel slowly and see", and peeling back the banana skin revealed a flesh-colored banana underneath.

How we do

In this weekly series, folks can chime in and drop links to whatever it is they've been listening to recently + browse others' suggestions. You can follow the suggested genre if you'd like, but don't feel confined to it; you're free to suggest whatever you wanna. 🙌

If you're interested in having other discussions about music, consider following the aptly named #music discussions organization.

Let's see some album art! 🧑‍🎨

Note: you can embed a link to your song using the following syntax {% embed https://... %}. This should work for most common platforms!

Looking forward to checking out what y'all come up with! 🎶

As for the picture, I would also give a title: skating on the fragile universe.

WOW!! Never listened to this and I LOVE it. Honestly, I thought it might be a joke album when I heard the beginning... so glad I hung in there for this. What a beautiful mess! Gonna have to listen to this whole album now...

Actually it's the first time when I hear about them and thank you for that! I've listened to some songs and they are cool (also the videos are so colorful and dynamic) - it's nice to listen to something so different than "usual" or rather "popular" music.

I promise I only will mention "The Origin of Feces" (censured album cover version), it was a great idea for the album title. But for this post, I'd like to talk about the album The Great Execution by Krisiun from 2011.. I love the colors and all the elements and how this just combines with all the tracks.

Dang! I totally missed this last week. My b!! 😅

Hahaha, the child in me will never get over The Origin of Feces — you can give it all the mentions, lol. 💩

As for The Great Execution by Krisiun, this is so dope! the colors really are what make it. It's such a beautiful hellscape! If I had to go to hell, that's the version of it, I'd wanna go to, haha!

Hard rockin' tunes too. 🤘😈🤘

OOOooo rock on! Tool is one of those bands that I haven't listened to enough... I know they're good and I like'em when I listen to'em, but I just haven't really dug in yet. This is a good reminder to do so!

Also, love love love this cover. I know this artist right away! It's Alex Grey. Dude is so original, it's unmistakable!

HAHA I don't listen to it much either, but whenever I do it's really good.

Wow, I didn't know the cover artist, but seriously, THE GUY IS VERY UNMISTAKABLE 😯

Not long ago Masayoshi Takanaka's "All of me" showed up in the sidebar of my YouTube suggestions and I clicked on it not having any idea what it was going to sound like... it did not disappoint!

I watched the film, Ophelia, the other day and I just love this music from one of the scenes!

OOoo this sounds lovely — so epic. I'm absolutely loving the violins! Never heard of Steven Price, but this is seriously good stuff!

Also, I've not heard of the movie Ophelia... gonna have to look it up!

But, when I hear the name "Ophelia" it makes me think of the 70's song by The Band.

My band actually covers this, haha! It's a lot of fun to play. 😀
