Music Monday — What are you listening to? (Driving Edition)

cover image source: Giphy

We're back with another one! This time around I wanna hear those tunes that you like to hop in car and drive to. Don't have a car? All good... what kinda music do ya like to pop on when you're taking public transit, biking around, flying, etc. Really, the theme is more about movement... when you're on the go and moving, what kinda music do you like to listen to?

A clip from Wayne's World... 5 friends are in car rocking out, furiously bobbing their heads to the music

How we do

In this weekly series, folks can chime in and drop links to whatever it is they've been listening to recently + browse others suggestions. You can follow the suggested genre if you'd like, but don't feel confined to it; you're free to suggest whatever you wanna. 🙌

If you're interested in having other discussions about music, consider following the aptly named #music discussions organization.

Alright then, let's hear what music y'all like to drive to! 🚗 Note: you can embed a link to your song using the following syntax {% embed https://... %}. This should work for most common platforms!

Looking forward to listening to y'all's suggestions! 🎶

I'm Brazilian but I love the United States. With that I have an addiction to listening to American radios, something like this: onlineradiobox

So if you have good indications I would appreciate it 🤣

Ooo nice! That's a fun way to tune into American music.

Just to note that the link you shared takes me straight to Hits 96 FM out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. One thing to know is that there are radio stations all over America... you kinda get some different flavors in different parts of the country, so it might be fun for you to explore a bunch of different stations in different locations. And of course, certain stations are bigger (i.e. further-reaching) than others.

One national station that is publicly funded and pretty interesting is NPR — it's definitely more than just music, but they have an awesome eclectic selection of music that they share. I love this series that they have on YouTube called Tiny Desk Concert where they bring in an artist/band/group and have them perform a small selection of songs in the NPR offices.

For instance, this Tiny Desk performance by Juvenile at the end of June is a lotta fun (content warning: the language in this video gets pretty inappropriate):

Yes, I'm trying different radios and getting to know different American themes 🤣

I didn't know the one you shared but I will definitely listen to it today!

Thank you for sharing my friend! I started listening to this performance that you shared and I already liked it!

I'm glad you dig it!

So, Juvenile and crew (The Cash Money Millionaires) were a popular hip hop group in the late nineties/early 2000s. This is definitely a throw-back to old rap music that I grew up with.

NPR goes all over the place... some hip hop, some folk music, international music, and more. It's super eclectic. I like watching the tiny desk concerts because they're often playing songs in a more minimalistic way... you can only fit so many instruments behind that desk haha!

Cooll, their style of music is really cool and nice to hear! Especially when coding, these styles make me more focused, I'm not sure why 🤣

But absolutely it's remarkable that you really are passionate about music! 🤣 When you come to Brazil, let me know in advance, so I can introduce you to a really cool style of music that we have which is "samba", I think you'll like it!

Oh wow, I would love to visit you in Brazil sometime, Renan. Better watch what ya say throwing around invites like that; I may actually take you up on it... especially when it involves cool music. I'm vaguely familiar with Samba, but could def use another introduction!

Ooo wait a minute, I think we're missing a link to the mix.

Lil Wayne is pretty dang cool. I love just how prolific of a rapper he was... he put out soooooo many mixtapes where he rapped on top of everybodies' beats. He's a super talented freestyler and cracked me up so many times with his raps.

was??? he still is !!!!he is still busy releasing stuff the last time I checked I was listening to some stuff on his YouTube channel. I remember telling someone how the stand up comedy circuit and rap have a connection from the history of LP comedy releases back in the 60's and 70's. There is such a deep connection between rap and comedy.
lately one of his lines that reverberates in my head is :

"you out of character .....me I'm out of patience/ Sick and tired like Malaria/ these *oes like mosquitoes/ ....

To me that's a hotline. You can't be upset. Go and Listen to rap and come back still upset. I always feel better. I feel like I reach a higher state of mind. a different sense and level of spirituality.

I just briefly popped on both the Dub Syndicate and Judas Priest tunes and I can tell I'm gonna dig these too. I'm relatively familiar with both so kinda know what I'm getting into here.

Good tune suggestions all around! 🙌 Thanks so much for taking the time to share music with me in this series... ya got good musical taste!

Hi Michael,
I've been offline for a couple of weeks due to the start of the semester. We drove my daughter from home in Oklahoma to graduate school in Illinois in a big old Uhaul truck. For any Beatles and Wings fans out there, one album I happened to be listening to on the trip was McGear - it's a 1974 release by Paul McCartney's brother, Mike. Paul produced it, Paul and Linda co-wrote many of the songs, and other members of Wings formed the backing band. This is considered the "long lost Wings album" and it's quite a hidden gem. "Givin' Grease a Ride" is the most road-worthy rocker. The whole album is fun and quirky, and very Wings-like. The original has 10 tracks, but this link is to a 2019 re-release that includes about twenty bonus tracks Mike found on tape in his attic.

Oh rockin' suggestion Monty! 🎸

I've never heard this album before... just popped it on and can tell it's a gonna be a good one! I absolutely love Wings and can hear them in there already. The 70's is probably my favorite era for music. I think I'd heard of Mike McCartney in passing before but never really explored his stuff... I believe the context in which I heard of him was that he had released some comedic music. Really cool to hear that he created an album like this — the harmonies on "Man Who Found God On The Moon" are super awesome. Also, "Givin' Grease a Ride" just came on and it is indeed a rockin' tune... good driving music.

I hope your trip to Oklahoma went as smoothly as can be and congrats on your daughter going to grad school, that's awesome!

Anywho, appreciate popping in to share this music with me. I'm very much enjoying this album and the story behind it!

Great share, Joe! It reminds me of another mix, but I can't put my finger on what right now... if it comes back to me, you can bet that I'll hop in here and share it with ya.

One of my all-time favorite driving songs has to be Hallogallo by NEU!

It has what's referred to as a "motorik" drum beat, which is a really driving, continuous drum beat:

I love it!

Yes. Yes. Yes. Inside is the best. If you listen to Inside (The Songs), and listen to Bezos III and The Future, two songs in direct succession, a perfect transition. also, WTFIGO (:D)

Gotta love the beauty of asynchronous communication — that you can drop this on a Tuesday and I can come back on a Friday to enjoy it. 🙌

So yep, just popped it on this AM and I'm digging it. Heavy and badass. Appreciate ya sharing! 🤘
