Music Monday — What are you listening to? (Video Game Soundtrack Edition 👾)

cover image source: Giphy

Last week, we covered movie soundtracks, and this week we're moving on to video game soundtracks! Whether you're into the retro vibes of chiptunes (8-bit and 16-bit music) from years past or ya dig the more modern soundtracks that accompany today's Triple A titles, I wanna hear what you're into! Let us know the accompanying game that the music comes from and feel free to add details like when-abouts in the game it played and why it holds meaning. But mostly, just let us know why it sticks out to you!

Mario headbanging and gesturing the sign of the horns 🤘

How we do

In this weekly series, folks can chime in and drop links to whatever it is they've been listening to recently + browse others' suggestions. You can follow the suggested genre if you'd like, but don't feel confined to it; you're free to suggest whatever you wanna. 🙌

If you're interested in having other discussions about music, consider following the aptly named #music discussions organization.

Alrighty, game on. 🎮 Note: you can embed a link to your song using the following syntax {% embed https://... %}. This should work for most common platforms!

Looking forward to listening to y'all's suggestions! 🎶

I have a very special place in my heart for the soundtracks of "The Last of Us" games.

My favourite "It Can't Last" by Gustavo Santaolalla, from "The Last of Us PT2".

Wow, that's some beautiful guitar on that track. Great suggestion, Ry!

I'm actually about to start playing "The Last of Us" on PS4 (I'm still in the last gen, haha) and I'll have to listen out for the music.

Have fun! I really loved the games (PS4 player here too! No need yet for me to move to next gen) and I hope you like them too. I'm sure the soundtracks will capture you!

Who's waiting for this game remastered released in pc steam and consoles? This game or even the suikoden series has catchy OST to my ears, wonderful works from Miki Higashino.

Oooo wow, this is lovely.

I think JRPGs often have beautiful piano music like this. FFX definitely comes to mind!

Yeah, it is! And the biggest update, 2.2, is coming out super soon, so yeah! You should join. If you want to, you can sign up for an account (go to settings (the gear wheel) and then account then sign up and I’ll add you! That’s of course if you want to. Also, highly recommend getting the full version, for 1.99 on mobile and 3.99 on steam. :)

Oh man, as much as I appreciate the invitation, I have mostly fallen off gaming in the past few years. I almost exclusively play single-player campaign games now... I mentioned to someone up above about getting started with The Last of Us. Honestly, it's been sitting in my games library for like a year and a half. 😅

It's not the soundtrack of a game, but it's all video game music--the album "Game On!" of the cellist Tina Guo:

Game On! is the eighth studio album by Tina Guo and it is themed around video game music. It was recorded in Los Angeles and released on 10 February 2017. It also featured the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and the vocals from Kvitrafn.

Wow! This is epic... what an excellent compilation of video game tunage. Reminds me that I love the Metal Gear Solid soundtrack!

She's awesome. She tours regularly with Hans Zimmer and has played on some of Zimmer's movie scores, connecting to last week's theme of movie soundtracks. Not sure which ones.

It might be because I played the absolute crap outta the game, but the Halo 1 theme song is probably my favorite video game theme of all time.

That said, the guitar that was added to the Halo 2 theme is bad ass... great addition!

And finally, I really loved the moody, jazzy, film noir-esque vibe of this song from the Halo ODST soundtrack:

OOoooo awesome! I absolutely love that game. It's a true work of art.

Honestly, I'd kinda forgotten the soundtrack until I just popped it on... it's appropriately epic! Definitely gives a vibe.

This is such a great song! I got to hear a live orchestra play it at Video Games Live, and it was absolutely amazing! If anyone ever has a chance to attend VGL, I definitely recommend it!

Oh bad ass!! Sonic would totally rock out to this. 🎸

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the soundtrack for me. I played that game loads. 😀

I especially loved the theme for level 2, the Chemical Plant... it's funky and weird:

I am vibing to some Twenty One Pilots!

I usually go through multiple genre changes throughout the day. I jam to some metal in the afternoon and usually start with some indie in the morning.

Good stuff! My friend absolutely loves Twenty One Pilots... I haven't quite gotten into them yet, but I know they have some bangers.

Indie in the AM and Metal in the PM sounds like a good flow. 😀
