Music Monday β€” What are you listening to? (Halloween Edition πŸŽƒ)

cover image source: Giphy

Halloween is tomorrow! In celebration of, I wanna hear y'all's favorite horror-themed tracks and creepy tunes. Whether you wanna throw out a song that is specifically meant for Halloween or if ya know of a tune that just feels appropriately scary, the choice is yours. If you end up dropping a violent or particularly scary music video, please just leave a little content warning for those of us that are digging through the list to find music. By the way, this isn't the first time we've visited this theme, so if you wanna dig through the past version, you can find it here. Alrighty, let's rock and ghoul! 🎸🧟

How we do

In this weekly series, folks can chime in and drop links to whatever it is they've been listening to recently + browse others' suggestions. You can follow the suggested genre if you'd like, but don't feel confined to it; you're free to suggest whatever you wanna. πŸ™Œ

If you're interested in having other discussions about music, consider following the aptly named #music discussions organization.

"And whosoever shall be found without the soul for getting down must stand and face the hounds of hell and rot inside a corpse's shell..." from MJ's Thriller. Note: you can embed a link to your song using the following syntax {% embed https://... %}. This should work for most common platforms!

Looking forward to listening to y'all's suggestions! 🎢

This thread, I like =)!

Horror is the bread and butter of my life.

So here's some stuff that I like to listen to when I czzzodde!

Songs from Movies:

Probably not the spookiest. They were either light in a dark place or an introduction to a mystery.

Game OSTs:

I listen to these when I code cause they generally have zero talking and are really chill...to me. I've heard them about 650xs each, so they don't take up a lot of processing space. But they occupy the void, which is good.

I'm late to the party, but I'll probably be listening to the Fear & Hunger soundtracks from now on too:

Songs from albums:

I like how off putting these songs are. I always feel a little creeped out when listening to them. I like that =)

*Sob, I don't know how the hey everyone is posting Youtube Markdown but I wanna know - gimme the secret!

**Wahaha! Unlocked said secret. Muwahhahaha!

Awww yeah! Loving see all these great recommendations, Jo. So glad you chimed in with all these! πŸ™Œ

And I got you on the embed! Here's how it's done:

{% embed https://... %}

For instance, your first link should look like this when you write it out:

{% embed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e15Uz_7fEms %}

When not written in a code snippet that'll looks like this:

Muwahahahaha! Thanks Michael~!

Is this for this site alone? Should I be looking up dev.to docs or something? I tried my hand at the markdown version but I think even that might have been bunk. This is good stuff. Hope it doesn't just help me.

Also, thanks for the jam-down thread. I love me some jams =)~

Bahhh! I'm sorry I missed your question here.

So the embeds are indeed something that only works this way on DEV (to my knowledge!)... but otherwise our Markdown rules are like most other places I think.

Our Editor docs are a little scattered and some things could possibly be out of date... we need to do better! πŸ˜…

However, I can point you to a couple good resources:

First up, check out our Best Practices for Writing on DEV series here and in particular this post:

And also, give a read through our Editor Guide! I think that should be handy to ya.

One last thing, a DEV member wrote up a pretty cool helpful post earlier this week, check it out!

Super-duper no worries! I figure everything happens if/when it's supposed to happen. So I don't hold my breath about anything. And, to be honest, I rapid fire ask about 1,000 questions a day. Either to myself or others. So it's to be expected a majority fall to the wayside =)!

I'm gunna tab these and leaf over them in a bit. Thanks again for always being so helpful/kind!

Hot damn! What a good list of horror-ble tunes. πŸ§€

I don't know many of these, but am def digging the first two suggestions... I'll keep making my way through the list. Halloween may be over, but I'm not over it. πŸ‘»

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I eat spookies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So if you ever want some spook-ables, hit me up! Hahahaha!

Oh, while I haven't looped this mindlessly recently this a a lofi mixtape that I really like to put on and focus with. I've been doing OSTs, but this is still my bread & butter.

I also fall into a meditative state with this on, even though it's got a smidgen of wambulance lyrics. But that's not so much spoopy, as it's the space I go when I listen to some good spoopy music =)! (It is pensive though, so that could sort of be...spoopy.)

I wouldn't have the idea if you didn't give the cue, but there was a German Power Metal band by the name of Helloween. In 1987 they

released their second album, Keeper of the Seven Keys, cited by AllMusic as "a landmark recording that remains arguably the single most influential power metal album to date.

Pathetic as it may have sounded even back then, I remember how much I enjoyed singing along as a teenager. At least, they didn't take their music and lyrics too seriously. As I just learned, the band is still active. Here they are playing at Wacken festival in 2018 (image: Wikipedia).

Haha!! Love this anecdote.

And I can see the appeal. This rocks hard! 🀘

I always love hearing it when theatrical bands like this don't take themselves too seriously. When you rock that hard and go that dark, it definitely borders on being absolutely ridiculous, but I love it, haha!

For a long time, I was kinda turned off by metal and 80's hard rock because it just seemed so over the top, but as I've gotten older my taste for it has grown because I do feel like a lot of the acts were in on the joke or at least knowingly leaning hard into the theatrics.

Haha, on another note, I just got the part where he's wailing "disease, disease, disease my friend" πŸ˜… and abruptly, it slowed down to this beautiful, bluesy mellow guitar solo. This is great! πŸ™Œ

There is a lot of metal bands that I listen that would fit this post (Iron Maiden, Helloween, Powerwolf, etc). But I'll choose my favorite song from the composer Peter Gundry, always listen to it when I'm reading something horror themed. Nox Arcane is great for that too

Bruno, you always come in with some badass suggestions!

This tune by Peter Gundry link is absolutely giving off Halloween vibes. The Piano actually really reminds me of the classic Halloween Theme by John Carpenter.

Then the angelic but creepy voices make me think of Danny Elfman:

But the drums and heavy guitars give it its own unique vibe... super cinematic, dark, and cool!

I'll have to look up Nox Arcane a little later on today.

It's not exactly Hallowe'en themed, but I guess close enough: I've been listening to a lot of Rosegarden Funeral Party recently.

Oh awesome! I'd never heard of this band before but I really dig them!

I also feel like it's close enough to theme... they got a kinda gothic edge to them. Rock on!

I like the post punk vibe of the song "Martyr" (I know ya suggested the album)... and it reminds me of a song by TV on the Radio that has a similar post punk vibe and is also somewhat Halloween-ish.

Someone recently asked me who my favorite artist is to listen to for Halloween. It's Tom Waits.

So, what Tom Waits' songs am I going to be listening to this Halloween? Here's a sampling for y'all:

This list could go on and on and on... πŸ˜†
