Music Monday β€” What are you listening to? (Homeland Edition)

cover image source: Liotta Seoul

Alright alright! So, this week the focus is gonna be on sharing music from your native, home land. You can take that prompt however you wanna... home could be where you were born, where you currently live, where you lived most of your life... It could also be your home country, state, province, city, town, etc. Alternatively, maybe you just have a song that reminds you of home? That's fair game too. Whenever sharing your choice please just let us know why this music is your choice!

The words "Home is where the computer is"

How we do

In this weekly series, folks can chime in and drop links to whatever it is they've been listening to recently + browse others suggestions.

If you like talking about music, consider following the org #music discussions for more conversations about music!

So, wanna share some tunes that make you feel at home? Note: you can embed a link to your song on most platforms using the following syntax {% embed https://... %}.

I look forward to listening to y'all's suggestions! πŸ‘‚ 🎢

Sexy suhi is a french duo producing minimalist electro songs with raw and provocative lyrics. That's kinda special but I love it so much

This is πŸ”₯ There's something really French about the production that I can't put my finger on (no, not the lyrics), love it.

This is special! I'm a tad delayed here, but jamming out now and really digging this. I'm gonna have to translate the lyrics later, but the sound of it all is great.

This is a fitting track from my birth home Auckland, New Zealand:

This one is from Stuttgart, close to where one side of my family is from. The track name translates to 'put your ear to the tracks of history':

Awww yeah! Lovin' that @peace tune β€” I'm straight vibin'.

And same goes for this tune by Freundeskreis. Fun music video too... love the acoustic guitar inclusion.

Both of these songs are just so laid back. They would've totally fit on the last chill edition! 😌

I really appreciate you sharing these hip hop tunes with me... you're turning me on to some new jams and reigniting my love for downtempo, chillhop stuff! Please keep coming back, haha... I really dig your musical tastes. πŸ˜€

I remember buying the Freundeskreis album this track is on when it just got released and not listening to much else for the next couple of weeks.

That's so cool! I can imagine the impact this had when it came out.

This was a kind of connection to the land my father came from when I was younger. Freundeskreis was the first group I really got into, where I found out German rap can be real smooth.

I loved it. The album released in early 1997, I was 17 at the time and everything very much clicked for me: I was really into hip-hop at the time (still am today), FK’s politics aligned well with my own and the whole album was just so dope. Glad I got to see them live.

I've been listening to the new album by my friend Alex Cornish, an amazing singer/songwriter who is based in Scotland, but who I originally got to know when he was here in London. One of the nicest men you will ever meet!

Here's a video from a lockdown livestreamed show he did a couple of years ago, in support of a venue in my home county of Hampshire that I've seen him live at several times...

Wow! This is absolutely gorgeous sounding. The violin loops are giving me chills and his voice really floats on top of all the instrumentation. Also, it's just so cool that he did this in support of a venue!

This is my favorite streaming radio station which has locations in Helsinki, Finland as well as Tallinn, Estoniaβ€”the sets are often local DJs from Finland or Estonia so it is a great service which keeps me connected to my Finnic-roots. idaidaida.net/

Oooo awesome! I'm digging this already. πŸ™Œ

I'm tuning into TietÀjÀt TietÀÀ and lovin' it. Kinda reminds me of DJ Koze who I also love jamming to.

I really like listening dj sets on the Boiler Room YouTube channel and this definitely reminds me of that. 😎

Thanks so much for sharing!

Ben E. King is from my small hometown of Henderson, North Carolina! I think he is most famous for the song "Stand By Me" (see below) but he's also part of the excellent soul/doo-wop group The Drifters who had several hits of their own with Ben E. singing lead.

Alrighty, I'm back for even more, haha!

This time around, I wanna show off a couple cool indie groups from NC...

First up, we got Sylvan Esso, an electro-pop, husband & wife duo who hail from Durham, NC. The beats are bad ass and the vocal phenomenal. Appropriately, this video is of them at home:

Next up, check out Future Islands from Greenville NC. These folks specialize in synth pop with a bit of a retro tinge and again, phenomenal vocals. The lead singer dances like a wild animal! Here's one of my faves:

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή Old but still good, Kruder & Dorfmeister:

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή Currently my favorite Austrian rappers, Kreiml & Samurai:

πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡ One of my favorite underground-y Thai acts, DCNXTR. Fun fact: we booked them for the PyCon after-party a few years back:

πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡ The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band plays traditional Northeastern Thai music with a modern twist. Listen to the whole set if you have the time, it's worth it!

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ Bonus: while Krom are from Cambodia, they wrote my favorite song about Bangkok, my home for 7 years.

I'm back for more...

Here's a pretty damn good hip hop tune from my area that is about my area called "North Cack" by G Yamazawa (feat. Joshua Gunn, Kane Smego):

And yep, it totally brings to mind Petey Pablo's "North Carolina (Raise Up)" ... hard to hear a rap about Carolina and not think about Petey Pab, haha!

I liked North Cack so went to look up the artist on Spotify and realized I already had one of their songs on one of my playlists:
