Appwrite OSS Fund Sponsors Flame Engine

Hi readers πŸ‘‹, welcoming you back to the "Appwrite OSS Fund" series, where we celebrate open-source maintainers. πŸŽ‰

πŸ€” What Is OSS Fund?

On the 4th of May, the Appwrite team launched the OSS Fund, an initiative to support open-source project maintainers. Being an open-source company, we wanted to give back to the community and help as many people as we can.

The OSS Fund is an initiative that is very close to our heart.

πŸ“’ Announcing The Thirteenth Project

After careful considerations from the committee we are thrilled to announce the thirteenth project:

πŸ€” What Is Flame Engine?

Flame Engine is a game engine for Flutter. A game engine provides a structure for how to develop your game and with the tools to solve problems that are common when you are developing games, for example image handling, input, collision detection, particles, effects etc.

🀝 Meet The Maintainer

5 and a half years ago Luan started a little project while experimenting with this new UI toolkit called Flutter. He had gained some inspiration from Reddit for how to write the basis of a game engine and this was the starting point for Flame.
During the years it has grown far beyond what he could possibly imagine at that point with 2800 commits, 7400 stars, 150+ contributors, used by 5000 public github projects and with a core team of five people (Lukas (spydon), Erick, Jochum (Wolfenrain), Renan and Luan).

πŸ’‘ How Did The Idea Of Flame Engine Come Up?

Luan wanted to experiment with Flutter and this was a great project to test how powerful Flutter was, since games are pretty much the most resource intensive things you can code (when it comes to applications) and that's how Flame Engine was born.

🚘 The Journey So Far

What started as an idea, got its first commit made by Luan on 21st October 2017. Next day, the first release was made (v0.1.0), fast forward to November 14th, Feroult starts committing to the project. On May 26 2018, the first logo of Flame Engine was made by Erick. The team slowly started growing, as Renan started contributing from October 17th, followed by Lukas on April 4th 2019 and Jochum on Dec 5th 2019. 2020 is when keyboard support v1.0.0-rc1 was released. On Aug 5th 2021, Pasha starts contributing and later that same year on December 8th, v1.0.0 was finally released, after 14 months of release candidates.

πŸ—’οΈ Ending Notes

As the team continues to build Flame Engine for the open source community, we want to thank maintainers like them for contributing back to the community.

If this story resonates with you or your friend, tell them about OSS Fund, as applications are still open:
