Yea the heart looks like 🍑 -- I still don't get the new unicorn though. The pointy line at top right is the horn, and the squiqqly lines to the left is... (?) the mane? the body?
What do you think?
I mean, icons don't need to be extremely literal. As long as they represent something that others can (hopefully) understand, it's good. So whether it's a mane or body it doesn't really matter. What matters is that you can identify it as a unicorn.
I can identify it solely because of my recognition of the old icons. I doubt if I were a new user I'd know what it is. Someone in this thread said pushpin, it's probably what I would assume it was (because of the pointy line).

I recently read, and read before that the origin of the heart shape is based on the female anatomy. I have tried researching it and every source I find gives differing opinions on the matter.
On a Facebook page I follow they posted this but gave no source.
I actually had to go and fully clear my cache to get all the updates. Otherwise it seemed the UI was stuck in a weird state. This is what my UI and new Icons looked like for the longest time until I realized I needed to fully clear the cache.
On mobile it was even weirder. It put the icons at the top of the page instead and they were quite large. Made most of the posts larger than they should had been.
We unfortunately still don't have an ideal solution internally to push big changes like that without breaking some things for a short period of time because of caching. But that's something we have on our radar and work on 👍
Same; When seeing this post, I actually wondered for a bit if it was satirical, and this was an unintended change. After a full refresh, things make more sense. 😁
Can someone summarise what's changed? Unfortunately, I'm visiting DEV less often than I'd like to, so I see it's definitely become a bit cleaner, but can't remember how it was. Actually, this is my first comment ever on DEV.
Very clean! And the new editor interface is much better. Only the preview does not scroll to where I'm writting, making the writing experience on DEV a bit difficult.

I'm also wondering now why posts have a different "heart" icon to comments, and the "pulse" effect is only on posts. Since it's probably extra work to make them behave differently, it was probably a deliberate decision to keep them distinct. But I wonder why?
I just noticed it today. I like the design changes. It was subtle enough that I didn't really even notice it until I went to heart a post and fully looked at the new layouts. Still, I think the changes look really good.

Weirdly enough for me, the bookmark icon is green active or with hover like the unicorn. I'm also using the black/green theme though, so maybe it's a bug in that theme.
We changed the proportions of the layout. The previous layout was.. umm... a bit random and we used to have lots of issues with it especially around responsiveness). Actions bar (like, unicorn, bookmark) was outside of actual layout (kinda on the left from DEV's logo).
So we updated it. I'm sure it feels strange but give it a day or two :)

I like it, though I wouldn't have guessed the unicorn icon was a unicorn if I hadn't seen the old one, and the heart now looks a bit like a bum.
Now I can't unsee it either!
I think we will now officially start calling our actions: bum & pushpin :)
I did think the unicorn was a pushpin at first lol
what does it mean? I know that the bookmark button is a bookmark button. (lol)
what toes the unicorn button do?
I think it gives a post more of a boost, like an extra like button 🤷♂️
lol, maybe it's like multiclaps implementation on Medium?
whatever it is, I always click the three of them if I want to save the post
and only click love if I like the post
Now I can't unsee it...
totally agree u.u

I agree it isn’t very readable as a unicorn.
Historically, wasn't the heart symbol always a bum? Like actually, as a deliberate medieval choice or something?
Ok, apparently there is some debate on that:
Is the heart symbol based on female anatomy?
I recently read, and read before that the origin of the heart shape is based on the female anatomy. I have tried researching it and every source I find gives differing opinions on the matter.

The heart symbol is most certainly not based on the actual human heart, but I always figured the other stuff was mostly urban legend....
This passes muster with me.
Thanks, now I can't unsee the bum in the heart.
The best use of "R G B" seen by me. I really like the transition effect and the shades of Red, Green and Blue which are used.

That unicorn is soooo doooooope😍😍
it;s awesome

Nothing super major in terms of functionality but a lot of UI adjustments around the edges. It’s more polished and cohesive, we hope.
Definitely looks more polished, good job!
it caught me off guard when it changed because i have been using dev for a short period of time. but I don't mind it

Heeey, would you mind reporting that on GitHub as issue and add more details? I would really appreciate it!
Dev team always doing something best to make Dev community amazing 😍 big thanks to team 💐

The new UI is nice, I must agree.
Someone mentioned the "pulse" effect on another thread and I couldn't see it. Works for me now, and I like it.

Yes, that’s a possibility.
I'll set a reminder to open an issue on GitHub in the morning (or heck even a PR).
Yeap, it's a bug in theme. I'll look into it.PR is waiting to be merged :)
The left side bar seems way bigger

also check this i.imgur.com/0vUp57u.png . The size guide length and width seems to be crossing the box
Very nice, I've been waiting for something like this for a long time now =)
I like it very much! It's clean and modern, definitely an improvement IMHO.
I love the new ❤️🦄🏷️ icons!!
I like the option to keep the site's navbar on top of page.
more real screen estate means more love
New reactions icons are good, But it is not visible like the old colorful ones and can cause less reactions.
it now looks more like a facebook feed
I think I'd like a toggle for comment preview on posts, unless that's already a thing
Not a feature yet, but it's on the radar.
What is the unicorn for?
Fancy Pansy~
old one is cool
it's great, but I do miss the thicker borders in some places like the "write a post" button up top
I prefer the old one
nice
I got github's new UI update and when I refreshed dev.to I was confused after seeing dev.to's new UI immediately.
