Graduated high school just now. Want to be a software engineer, from a top tier college, but would have to go for a repeat course. For which, I would lose a year.
Is it worth it? Or is there a better way to pursue the career I dream of.

If you want to be a Software Engineer, college doesn't matter. Only your skills will matter. Make sure you devote your time in learning next generation technologies.
If you do so, you will do better than most of your friends in top tier college.
I think there are more self tought engineers than you would think. And unless you thinking to work in goverment or few other demanding companies generaly is not matter. Skills and projects that you have made matter. Good luck!
If you don't have clear the basics of computer science, learn them first.
