Hi! Dev.to started popping up on a lot of the aggregators I read to keep current. It also seems to be suffering less from the immense degradation over on Medium 0_0 (Anybody else remember how high quality the writing was on Medium when it was new??)

Anyways, I've seen some of the folks on here posting in the Fediverse and I am happy to be here!

But really interesting that fait divers means “news” in French 🤔

Hi everyone. I'm Cesar. I was first introduced to code in my summer job in high school. I worked for a nonprofit and we had to build a website. So that was my first introduction to html/css, but I wouldn't get my first computer until my first year of college. That's when I began working with Java and other programming languages.

I work with C#, java, sql, javascript. I am currently falling in love with working on the front end. I am looking into animations and React.

Aside from tech, I like to play basketball, play video games, and go hiking.

Hello everyone, I'm Juliya.

I'm a self-taught developer dwelling within Texas.
I started dabbling at the tender age of 12 playing Neopets (of course), eventually progressing onto creating MySpace Profiles as a young teenager.
I've done a whole lot of freelance client/contract work throughout the years but thankfully last year I began gearing up for a much needed change professionally. These days, I am up to my eyeballs in Warhammer 40,000 Miniature Commissions and am starting an organization that will provide digital services and solutions to local metal bands free of charge.
I randomly stumbled upon the site but liked it immediately, mostly for the design. I'm sick of most sites looking the same XD

Hey everyone. I'm Dwayne :). After reading a couple good articles from dev.to and hearing nice things about the community I decided to give the site a try.

I'm currently (as of April 2019) learning how to design and implement programming languages using the book "Essentials of Programming Languages by Friedman and Wand (3rd Edition)". It's difficult but rewarding learning from the masters.

My day job is as a full stack web developer for a Point of Sale software company. On a day to day basis I work with Ruby, PostgreSQL and JavaScript (React/Redux) among other tech. I dream of the day I get paid to work with Elm or Haskell or Rust.

Aside from that I enjoy playing basketball, running, cycling, swimming, hiking (I'm pretty active) and living a plant-based lifestyle.

You're welcome, Dwayne. Plant-based lifestyle? Can you please explain that?
I love your profile.

Sure Biodun.

With respect to my diet, I don't consume any animal products. Learn more here.

With respect to everything else, if there is a plant-based alternative I'd gravitate toward that option because it's usually better for the animals, the environment or us humans.

Hey this is actually pretty cool. I am building something similar, maybe we can chat about ways to collaborate? Check this out: stormkit.io, basically it’s a serverless hosting targeting modern web apps with server side functionality. It has built in support for ssr. Right now it could be used together with headless cms like prismic and contenful to build modern e-commerce/news websites. Was also thinking to add more features around this use case based on the demand. I’d love to hear your feedback

Hello! I'm Travis. I came across Dev.to while doing some self-study on Vue some time back, and I really liked the layout and the information passed through here. I've been creeping for a while and figured it's probably time to step out of the bushes! I *officially got in to software development at the end of 2017, with Lambda School, which I completed in June of last year. After that, I went on a 5 month hiatus journeying in to a Congressional Campaign as a tech consultant. I took December as a "vacation" because...campaign life was a killer to say the least! Since then I've been rebuilding what I learned and actively looking for my first dev role. Obviously took a wrong turn somewhere, heading in to May with no luck so far, so I hope to learn a lot from the community here and hopefully land my first official dev role very, very soon!

My passion for technology has grown quickly since I was young, even before high school. As such, the curiosity about "how computers work" pushed me to this new technology world.
By being autodidactic and dedicated, I ended up experimenting different types of programming languages such as PHP, javascript, Java, C+ and C#...but I quickly realized my fascination about Java, which defined my professional path.

But technology isn't my only passion. I love travelling and Crossfit.

Why travelling? I love to travel because it allows you to meet new cultures, taste new foods and learn to respect the differences, which I believe opens new horizons in my personal growth.

Why Crossfit? It is a very challenging sport that allows me to prove that I can exceed my self and conquer my fears and new challenges.

Hey All,

I've been in development since the mid-nineties - at school it was something that interested me and it seemed that I could make a living doing it (and was better than the alternatives given to me by my careers advice teacher). Due to major anxiety issues, however, I have always tried to keep my head down and stay invisible.

Well, I've still got those issues but decided it's never too late to push yourself to try new things!

I've recently started to talk at conferences about the human side of development. Both the ways that I have gotten through challenges in my career, and the mistakes that I and my team have made - and what we have learnt from them! And, thought that maybe these would make blog posts as well!

So now all I have to do is get the courage to write the first one :)

Hi all! My name is Jan and I'm from Ljubljana, Slovenia. I've always been fascinated with computers and everything that came along with. When I first came across programming, I was about 12yo, and had a great chance to learn Pascal, but putting it of, never came throught. So it took me about 16 years to realise, that I want something more challenging than my regular job(I'm currently working in a paper factory in four shifts 'oh, the irony'). So I went back to school (Higer Vocational College, Informatics) and got the basics in C#, SQL, HTML/CSS...
Learning is a bit slow, because I have two kids(a toddler and a baby), but it's motivating, because I'm not doing it just for myself.
I came across this platform by accident and couldn't be happier about it. So I hope, that in the future, I'll be able to contribute and help other devs and devs to be, to grow.
Got a couple of hobbies to: playing games, reading and every possible technology I can study.

Hi everyone,

Been a lurker here for a while, thought I'd say hello.

Been coding since I was 33, am now 42 and in my 3rd role.

I've mostly been in desktop old fashioned work with winforms,. Net and sql server.

However I'm interested in graph databases, constraint based programming and neural networks - these areas interest me as they feel like they would be converging interests I could use to solve interesting problems.

Currently exploring sql graph for a configurator validation tool for one business.

I'm not as keen on front end work as many others, I prefer to hang around back end, data stuff and code generation, middleware and the like.

As for advice for others, novices and otherwise, older books like code complete 2, pragmatic programming, programming pearls and the like are all valuable reading. And the newest cleverest stuff is often, very often stuff from the 60s and 70s from what I can see, except with more horsepower.

That's all for now :)

Hello everyone. I'm Anurag.
Right now I'm in my 2nd year of college. I always wanted to be able to programme. I first started with Android Development. I had no programming experience and because of that, I actually found myself copying pasting code from courses(yes it's a harsh truth). I learnt a little bit of C++, Java, Python.

To be honest I actually wasted my first year trying different things like Android, Selenium, Competitive programming, blockchain, designing etc.

In November 2018, I started with Web Development. Completed a course on Udemy (Web Dev Bootcamp Colt Steele). This course got me interested in Web Development. Then I took a couple of courses on JS (Jonas) and React (Mosh Hamedani). Built a few projects two full-stack web apps with Node & React and PHP & React.
Nowadays I'm looking into React Native (coming back to mobile dev 😜)
That's all about me. 😛
I would love to connect with other developers so I can learn more 😊
Have a great day :)

Hi everyone I'm TJ.

I am a beginning software developer. I have been learning for about 2 years now, going through FreeCodeCamp. I have my Front End Certification, and JS Algorithms and Data Structures Certification as well. These are the legacy certifications from FreeCodeCamp. I am currently learning React and who knows what will be next.

I currently work in the Commercial Aviation and have been for quite a while, it is what my background is in. I am a Private Pilot, but I have not flown in years. However flying is like riding a bike, pretty easy to hop back into it. When it comes to Aviation in general though I know a lot about operational items. If you ever have the one off questions about anything Aviation related, feel free to ask.

I have a huge passion for tech outside of work and programming is just one of many. I just realized about a week ago I have enough experience to get a job as a Front End Developer lol. Still trying to figure out where all this will take me, but I just find it fun. I also have a small business where I do a lot of repair work for computers and phones for people.

I stumbled across Dev.to when just Googling some random thing I needed a fix for while coding. I liked the community and decided to join. Not huge on the Social Media thing, but I do want to get more immersed in the software field.

Some questions for conversation:

  • How did you get to Dev.to?
  • Where did you start?
  • How long have you been working on on software development?
  • What is your current end goal?
  • What industry did you previously come from? If applicable.

I will enjoy talking to everyone.

I've started to see dev.to articles more and more and yesterday finally I decided to join when I saw how welcoming the community is :)

What I liked so far a lot is that the community seems to be super helpful and interested, which is something you lack in most of the other communities. Keep up the good work!

I am a fullstack engineer, specialising in modern frontend technologies like React, and golang, nodejs in the backend. I love developing tools, it's basically my passion. I started programming when I was 12 years old, so I guess that makes me a self-taught person :)

Looking forward to engage more with the community!

There's not really a lot of information on how to do this, so I thought I would start sharing some lessons learned. Basically I'm taking a bunch of ideas from the Kinect community and applying it to the web.

I have a bunch of hands-free experiments (everything from drawing to 360 YouTube to a dashboard to control physical real life robots and desktops) on Glitch at glitch.com/@browsehandsfree, and here is a GIF wall of some of these experiments:

Hello people,

I have been lurking around here for some time, and just know got the guts to really join. Hopefully I can learn even more from you guys and maybe teach a thing or two.

As my bio says, I am a student that likes to break stuff, and that's how I got into programming. I broke one of schools computers and had no idea how to fix it, so I broke it even more. Then I got caught and the IT guy fixed everything with like 3 lines in the terminal. From that day I was hooked, and have never stopped breaking stuff just to put it together since, and programming became like a drug addiction. So for a newcomer I guess I would say that "Reading documentation saves a lot of wasted time in Stack overflow" and "never stop looking for new stuff to learn or improve in yourself and your code" and remember that "simple is better than complex".

As you can imagine, I only started getting into this industry after the age of 30. It hasn't been easy, especially in a country as broken, corrupted, twisted as Serbia.

But I finally made it. I finally managed to find a developer job at my age :)

It just goes to show there is no such thing as a wrong time to start doing something. It is an overused phrase, but it really is better late than never.

As for content, I started sharing some thoughts about jobhunting and the industry, and documenting my journey on instagram, and some of the posts were pretty good, so I'm thinking of sharing them here, roughly once a week.

So I did struggle to learn at first but I stuck at it, as I was determined to provide to my peers and others that nothing could stop me.
To all newcomers to development and programming I say this. it’s not what others say or do that defines you, it’s the actions you take your self that benefit and defines you.

Hi! Dev.to, I am Promise, a Ruby on Rails Software Developer, I just started out with writing articles. I have been pondering on where to start with either Medium or Dev.to.

I finally made the decision to start here after reading @ryanfarney3 article on Why Your Technical Blogs Belong On Dev.to

I hope to connect with lots of other awesome developers out here and also learn new and exciting stuff here.

I feel glad to be a part of this community.

Any suggestions on how to write awesomely here?

It may be uncomfortable to publish articles, especially on topics you are trying to learn yourself. But, I promise you will continue learning and receive valuable feedback if you publish them here :)

Hello World! Just joined after seeing a few posts pop up here and there.

I’m a (freshly unemployed) Salesforce Admin who also works heavily in JavaScript. Been fascinated with programming since I was 14 (about 15 years), and believe I always will. I’m a tinkerer at heart.

For fun, I enjoy cycling and music production, though I need to do much more of both. Currently considering starting a blog and cross posting here.

The idea of a site for and by devs with a culture of inclusion and support is very appealing, so I’m glad to be here!

Greetings, my name is Carl. I'm an adult student entering my last semester studying software development. I am currently fulfilling my internship requirement for my degree by working as a Junior Developer. I'm working full-stack developing features and fixing bugs for a medical company's patient care software. My current project uses .NET core 2.2, C#, Vue, and Bootstrap to create a Single Page Application.

My boss/mentor has suggested I join this community to make connections and learn more about the current state of the industry. He also wants me to write up my own posts on topics he assigns, so I figure that will be my primary posting content for the time being.

I also like to fancy myself a musician and pay a lot of guitar in my free-time.

Hello,

I am taking some time today on this site.
Always looking for projects.
The last thing I did was a Teensy project for playing sounds when a button gets pushed. It was a freelance job for someone who actually paid equitably. And, last I heard he was enjoying it.

Last year I did a node.js stack for AxiomWare, a very small company that makes a Bluetooth to MQTT gateway. And, they are looking for real customers.

Soon, I should start a contract at Google Cloud. It is weeks away give or take a few. I will use node.js for that as well.

In the last year, I got some online certificates in AI, Robotics, Blockchain, and even Quantum Computing. I am always picking up ML concepts.

I have lots of projects that I have built up over time. The ones that are most complete were for paying customers. But, I have a few projects with the code on GitHub and many concepts gained from working in this field for a long time. It would be nice to work with people and bring these up to acceptable use.

I also like music. I have some hooks into songwriting. There may be some interesting music-related project out there.

This space seems like a solid community of people working on cool things as well as learning together so I thought I'd jump in :). I have been reading How To Design Programs on my free time recently and listened to Paul B's "Ten Things" that is all about how all we really know is that we have time, and that it will run out. So I created mutable lists of all the things that I want to do, read, see, listen to, etc. because why not fill time with enjoyable things.

My end goal is to run a tea shop ("JTea and used books" is the working title") So if you are interested in the world of horticulture hmu cause I'd love to talk.

I plan on starting a publication of sorts cross posted here and on my personal site (with the tech junk cross posted here) called all in pursuit of a tea shop that is an anthology of what has been learned, enjoyed, etc. and my thoughts about those things so if that seems at all of interest, wrong.design is my site (WIP, doesn't have the blog set up yet, but some of my art is there so if that is of interest).

So, yeah, can't wait to get to know you all, and if you have an interesting project, or idea and want a student to come along for the ride, I'd love to talk, OSS/Libre is a passion.

Hello everyone!

My name is Ardhi. Dev.to I think is one of the so out-of-the-box site I stumbled upon and luckily it's about what I'm passionate about! Thank goodness.

A little flashback, I was a network engineer and NOC guy mostly doing operation and maintenance stuff then popped out in this startup scene and seems like everyone has the next big thing idea.

And so I jumped on the bandwagon, learning myself some web development stuff, fall in love with React & Python after trying tons of others language and framework, maybe because of their practicability I've been trying to find the 'holy grail' to create MVPs as fast and functioning as they can without compromising with SEO and UI/UX/Design.

Phew.. So much to juggle these days. I work also as a DevOps tech lead in a local small startup dealing with their SaaS product. So happy to be here, hope I can learn from every bit of you, and my dream is to get the MVPs to climb the ladder, one trial attempt at a time.

Thanks again, guys.

Hello! I'm a senior .NET developer at a shop called STR. We do hotel market analytics primarily, and I'm the technical lead on our Digital Solutions team. That's a fancy way of saying that I wrangle a bunch of developers together to make web applications for our enterprise. I've been doing .NET stuff for about 7 or 8 years now, with a smattering of JavaScript exposure throughout those years. I'd like to learn a lot more about JS, though. And Python. And everything. I really just love learning new stuff.

I'm considering using dev.to as a means to write down things that I learn so I can have people tell me what I'm missing. I can't remember who it was or on what podcast I heard it, but someone said that writing stuff publicly really helped them retain knowledge, and I wanna do that too. Maybe the latest React Podcast with Kent C. Dodds? Anyway, that's a thing I think I would enjoy, so I'm going to go ahead and do that.

What would I recommend to a newcomer today? Hm. I think one of the things I've told some of the junior devs on our team is to be ambitious and don't worry about failing. Sometimes, you write something that is awesome and looks great and... it doesn't work how it should, and it gets shot down. And that's FINE. The important thing is that you learned something new - you were ambitious, you thought of an approach to a problem, and you tried it out. Sure, it wasn't the actual solution, but at the very least, there was a knowledge gain there. Also? Don't defer to me because of my title. I've got a "senior" in front of it, but, just because I do, doesn't make me infallible. Sure, I've been around the block a few times and seen a lot of wild stuff, but I am still learning stuff every day, and I'm often wrong about how stuff works too.

Hi all, my name is Mauricio (pronouncenames.com/pronounce/Mauricio), but you can call me Mau.

I've been a software dev since 2010... I majored in electrical engineering, then obtained my masters in computer science in 2014.

I started fiddling around with python around ~2008 when I was playing with IT stuff, then did my first real project using python/django in 2010, moved to rails after that, then starting using nodejs when it was version 0.8 around 2014. Been using Javascript for all the things around that time.

I moved to frontend in 2016 with React 0.14, until that point I was focused only on backend services, and I gotta be honest did not get the whole front end thing... if anything it was a nightmare at first, I just could not get the whole idea of rendering the virtual dom and the whole MVVM architecture, but after fiddling more with it, and actually understanding the whole way it works, I just fell for it.

Full stack developer since 2016, React & React Native, redux, node, and anything in between.

Lately I've been really digging into functional javascript, GatsbyJS, Razzle, Go, swift for IOS, Kafka.

So much stuff to learn, so little time, right?

Anyway looking forward to also collaborate more with open source, and have my own blog just to learn in public (gist.github.com/sw-yx/9720bd4a3060...)

Hey y'all! I found a sticker for this site on my desk this morning (very mysterious) and here I am. I'm a self taught dev, but went to school for design. I work at a UX consultancy, truematter, and love getting to learn about new industries and work with different dev teams across the country. I speak and write about web accessibility and web development, so this seems like a great place to be!

I'm still trying to figure out how things work on this site, but here is my attempt to say hello. As a software developer I always tried to be engaged with the community, I hope that dev.to may be a good way to do it. If someone would like to speak about: Javascript, Golang, Elixig, Functional Programming, Graphql, life and stuff just let me know :)

Hi! I've been a developer for many years, and have been working remotely for the last 4. Back when I started my career I blogged a fair bit and was active in a couple of creative coding communities but gradually stopped doing that.

I've been struggling to get back to blogging for years but only yesterday it occurred to me that joining a community could be a good way to... well, engage with a community. From there, choosing dev.to was a no-brainer.

So very glad to be here. Hi!

Hi everyone! I have been thinking about signing up to Dev.to for a while, but I'm a little terrified - I think that's imposter syndrome at work 😱

But I decided that the best way to get involved is to... actually get involved.

I'm hoping to be able to learn, contribute and hopefully one day be able to add some fantastic content of my own to the site!

Hi! I'm Alexis. I just joined after seeing a post on FCC about here--Hello, fellow campers! I started learning to code about a year ago through FCC's front-end challenges. Currently, I'm working towards my MCSA in SQL Server and teaching myself Python; I hope to eventually become a junior database dev or back-end dev. Happy to be part of a welcoming community of learners and sharers of information.

Outside of coding, I enjoy playing the violin and Assassin's Creed, meditating, learning French, and working out.

Collapse

letmypeoplecode profile image
Greg Bulmash 🥑

Start with getting them signed up. How does that work?
How do they build their profile? What goes in it?
What data from their profile is used to match them with others?
What's your matching algorithm for that data?
What data about their matches do you show them?
How do they connect with the matches that interest them?

Whether it's match.com from 1999 or the latest dating app from 2019, those questions apply universally.

And once you have those answers, the architecture of your app and the back-end services to power it should become more apparent.
