We love coding software and it is our prime hobby but when we are frustrated and exhausted from coding software, we need a rest. So when you take time off from coding "What you do in that time ?". So let's discuss about our hobbies other than programming.

  • Watching movies 🎥 and web series.

Since professional programming is my job, in my free time I enjoy coding, especially game development :D

But to be honest, my "non-coding" hobbies are:

  • cycling - I really like to clean my mind with an hour or two on the road (with some coding podcast in my headphones)
  • playing video games - mostly online multiplayer games like MMOs, MOBA etc.
  • reading books - fantasy, sf and crime stories!
  • watching anime - AYAYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Watching anime. Currently working through Lupin the Third, actively following Black Clover, One Piece, Boruto, Fire Force, and hoping for new seasons of My Hero Academia and One Punch man.
  • Reading. Currently reading one of the better English translations of Miguel de Cervantes Saaverda’s El ingenioso hildago Don Quixote de la Mancha. Probably reading either J.R.R. Tolkein’s translation of Beowulf or Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogoy, unless of course one of the various ranobe I actively read gets a new volume in English before I get there.
  • Cooking. I’m a bit of a gourmand, and unfortunately much of the international cuisine that I particularly enjoy is not readily available in the area where I live (and what cuisines are often do not include many of the things I actually like from those cuisines), so i have to cook such food myself. This, in turn, has lead to me seriously impressing some relatives with comparatively simple dishes like gravlax or yakisoba simply because they’ve never even heard of them before, let alone tried them.
  • Video games. Currently actively playing Warframe.
  • Table-top RPGs. Just recently finished a homebrew D&D 5e campaign, currently playing in a Pathfinder 1e Kingmaker campaign, and working on building a homebrew Pathfinder 1e campaign.
  • LEGO. Picked up again as a hobby in the past year or so after having not done anything with LEGOs for years. Mostly focused on cars and other vehicles. I’ve built both the Lamborghini Siän and Bugatti Chiron sets (and plan to get the new McLaren and Ferrari sets coming out 2021-01-01), as well as a custom build of a Morgan Motors Three-Wheeler, and I’m currently working on a motorized Avtoros Shaman, though that’s on-hold until I can find an ABS-safe semi-dry lubricant that won’t make a mess everywhere (which is much easier said than done as it’s apparently difficult to find one that doesn’t include solvents that will degrade ABS in some way).

I recommend GATE (Crunchyroll), Erased (Crunchyroll, Netflix), Vandread (Funimation, Hulu), Robot Carnival (Amazon Prime), Memories (Amazon Prime), Re:Zero (Crunchyroll, Funimation), Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? (Crunchyroll, Netflix)

Collapse
ahferroin7 profile image
Austin S. Hemmelgarn

I love GATE (I’m sad they have not done any new seasons, there’s a lot more story there), and rather like Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon. I’ve not seen the others yet, though Re:Zero is on my list eventually. Next big one for me after Lupin the Third will probably be Detective Conan (known as Case Closed in the US because of ridiculous IP laws) as it’s one of the few remaining anime series based on a best selling manga that I have not seen.

Wow, as a native Spanish (and Spaniard for the matter) it impresses me that you are reading El Quijote, even in Spanish it's a dense book.

I’ve been on a bit of a streak recently reading older international literature. I decided about a year ago to expand my knowledge of historical literature, especially from other cultures. El ingenioso hildago Don Quixote de la Mancha easily made my reading list because of it’s cultural significance and how highly praised it is by many literary scholars. I’m part way through chapter 15 at the moment, and so far rather enjoying it, though I will admit that it is somewhat heavier reading than I am used to (though it’s nothing compared to Romance of the Three Kingdoms in that respect, that one almost reads like a history textbook...).

I love writing! I write mysteries and other fiction, as well as programming books.

I'm also a songwriter and solo pianist composer.

And I spend probably more time than is healthy playing Minecraft, and sometimes making data packs for it.

Besides all of that, I like cooking and baking, and gardening if I have the opportunity. I'd like to get back into raising chickens one of these days too...but I have to have the space to do that, and an apartment doesn't oblige that pursuit.

Lockdown actually gave me the time to be able to get something new out. For the longest time I have admired illustrators and decided to give it a go. I started with brush pens and have discovered a lot over the course of 2020. My kids have enjoyed using the brush pens too and I’ve started using watercolour pencils to see how they work for me. There’s so much to learn and practice on and I recently started an online illustration course.

I’m also trying my hand at learning to use vector design tools, for illustrations, designs and icons.

Lockdown has gave us time to think and focus on ourselves. We learn and tried new things during this period. Personally I learn

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe After Effects
  • React
  • During this I also started to write on D dev.to i.e, here.

I like making things, where things is a very broad category.

Things I have made this year:

  • Serving boards out of recycled pallets
  • An outdoor chair and toy chest that live on our apartments shared lawn
  • A sandbox (for the same lawn)
  • Upcycled a table into a coffee table out of more recycled pallets
  • Monitor shelf for my desk
  • A Hurdy Gurdy (Musical instrument) following the Nerdy Gurdy Plans
  • A 3.5M Long Snake that I knitted on my circular loom
  • A ~3M long scarf (also done on the circular loom)
  • Knitted several Christmas stockings
  • A wooden six pack holder
  • Lots of boxes (mainly for storing tools) out of scraps at the makerspace
  • A networked "On Air" sign that turns on and off when OBS is recording (okay there was a little programming for this one and I'm writing a post about it)
  • Some Christmas Ornaments
  • Attempted to make some mechanical earrings
  • A chocolate wheel (the spinning wheels from game shows)
  • Probably more that I've forgotten about

And when I'm not busy making things I enjoy hanging out in my friends streams, chilling with my partner on the couch watching shows, and tending to our balcony garden (which has three jacarandas that are nearly a year old, and a planter with three rockmelon plants in it, plus a smattering of other plants).

Sailing - mostly racing but I haven't been on a boat since the start of the coronapocalypse.

Flying - I actually did manage to add both gyroplane and UAV (drone) ratings to my license during the pandemic.

Photography, including photography of/from boats and aircraft.

Hiking and travel - mostly on hold due to the pandemic.

Woodworking on occasion though it has fallen by the wayside. Some cooking - I've been trying out sous vide lately. Dabbling with brewing/distilling.

My primary hobby is playing Magic: the Gathering. I play practically every major MtG format but I absolutely love Cube drafting.

My other hobbies include:

  • Exercise, especially weightlifting. Deadlifts are my absolute favorite!
  • Reading, basically all non-fiction. Usually tech/programming but I also like topics like Existentialism, pop-psych, Stoicism, & social-justice.
  • Video Games, mostly Ark Survival Evolved with my best friend on our private heavily modded server. I also love my Switch; been playing Hades and Ori.
  • Star Wars RPG. FantasyFlight Games has a spectacular custom dice system for role-playing and I've been playing a campaign with friends for over 4 years now.
  • "Lazy" Gardening: I've got some raised plots in my backyard and like to just scatter seeds and see what grows without upkeep! Kale, carrots, and potatoes are particularly hearty crops.
