I have had an Gmail account since 2005 (also 15 years ago) and this worked since the beginning for me. It seems strange to me it behaves differently for you.
Another Gmail tip:
A dot "." in gmail address is ignored. If your Gmail address is firstname.lastname@gmail.com it is equivalent (and fully working as a valid alias to your dot equipped address) as firstnamelastname@gmail.com or f.i.r.s.t.n.a.m.e.l.a.s.t.n.a.m.e@... or first....name....last....name@gmai...

So what happened is that my personal is
Chrisbongers@gm

I can use any dot other then that one and it will come to my box, just that combi will go to the other person π€¦
Atleast havenβt physically tested this for 2 years, might have been fixed by gmail.
