Requests for posts tag

We all have our favorite topics in software development, usually because of a combination of expertise and interests.

While reading the following post by @mikeralphson

a draft idea started forming in my mind. I then asked him if he was willing to write a post about the future of Web APIs:

I'll leave you with a request for a post if you want to write it: your opinions about the future of Web APIs. Where REST future lies, how is GraphQL evolving, alternatives to protobuffers like capnproto and whatever you want to talk about :D

In this one you talked about the past, I would love to read one about present and future :)

Dev.to is full of experts on various topics in software development and sometimes I see developers asking "What should I write about?".

Coming up with ideas is not always easy, we all know it.

Hence, my proposal:

why don't we create a tag that people can use to request posts from the community?

Does it make sense?

It can be as simple as "hi folks, I would like to know more about HTTP/2's server push" or it could be "I would like to write a post about this or that topic but presently I don't have time, so here you are"

There's no obligation to anyone obviously, it could also be just a way to know what people want to learn about.

I admit the idea is not fully formed, but it's the first day of the year, I'm just going to put it out there 😜

What do you think?

I think that's a great idea. We briefly tried creating a thread of this sort but it didn't really take off. Would you want to moderate a tag like this @rhymes ?!

Hi Jess, happy new year!

We briefly tried creating a thread of this sort but it didn't really take off.

second time's a charm? maybe...

Would you want to moderate a tag like this @rhymes ?!

Why not?! But what does a tag moderator do? :D

But what does a tag moderator do?

Mostly play with the descriptions in the tag page sidebar until it looks right ;)

Yep!

But once you have the role, you still still have the role once more functionality and responsibility arrives. 😄

We also now have a tag liquid tag, which is helpful with tags in general.

{% tag meta %}

#meta

Discuss all things dev.to!

@molly_struve recommended #postrequest below (not sure if pun intended).

#requestforpost probably fits the "request for x" template a bit better.

Once we settle on the tag name we'll make you mod.

hahahahaha

I'm not sure, I'm not a linguist but "postrequest" seems like "post request" as in "after a request"

I vote for #requestforpost or #requestsforposts

Once we settle on the tag name we'll make you mod.

I guess I can't moonwalk my way out of this :D

@ben Any recent movement on this one? love to see it!

@rhymes :

Was that a New Girl reference? If so, you're my new favorite person on this platform

@rhymes all you if you want to do this. #requestforpost still makes sense. If you confirm, we'll make you mod.

You know that I don't know? It's so ingrained in my brain that I'm not sure if it's from New Girl or if it predates it. But now you reminded me of the scene when Nick tries to moonwalk away :D

Let's do it! Worst case scenario the experiment doesn't take off and I'll be moderating my own ideas 🤣

This is actually really good idea, real implementation would be IMO pretty useful.

This is a fantastic idea! I've always found topic generation the hardest part of blogging and writing articles

I thought about it but I think there's a subtle difference.

#explainlikeimfive is about asking the community to explain concepts to you or whomever is reading

This should be about putting your interests and posts ideas out there and hoping for someone to pick them up ;-)

So, not "explain me monads because they're a complicated" but "I've always wanted to read something about monads" or "I want to write about continuation passing style, file systems and round robin but I don't have the time".

I admit it might not work because it's not 100% clear to me either, we just have to try :D
