Did you know that coding tools have evolved so rapidly that they’re now shaping the future of programming itself? As technology advances, platforms like Replit are leading the charge, making coding more accessible and collaborative than ever before. In this article, I’ll show you what Replit is and how to use it.
What is Replit?
Replit is an AI-powered software development and deployment platform that provides a versatile and collaborative environment for coding.
Founded in 2016 by programmers Amjad Masad, Faris Masad, and designer Haya Odeh, this online IDE has grown to serve over 30 million software creators worldwide.
It serves as an online integrated development environment (IDE) that supports over 50 programming languages and has powerful AI-driven features like Replit Agent. Replit is designed to simplify the software development process.
Key Features of Replit
- Integrated Development Environment (IDE): Replit offers a cloud-based IDE that supports over 50 programming languages. It allows users to create, run, and deploy applications without needing to set up local environments, similar to Project IDX from Google.
- Collaboration: The platform facilitates real-time collaboration, enabling multiple users to work on the same project simultaneously. This is particularly useful for team projects, pair programming, and educational purposes.
- Replit AI: An integrated AI tool assists with various coding tasks such as debugging, code completion, and generating code from natural language inputs.
- Deployment: Replit simplifies the deployment process, allowing users to build, test, and deploy applications directly from the browser. This includes support for hosting applications on custom domains and managing cloud services.
- Version Control: Built-in version control using Git allows users to manage their code changes effectively. Users can pull code from GitHub repositories and link their projects for seamless integration.
- Community and Educational Resources: Replit provides a platform for learning and community engagement, offering resources for teaching and learning programming languages.
- Accessibility: As a cloud-based platform, Replit can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, making it convenient for developers to work on their projects from different devices.
The platform’s versatility makes it attractive for a wide range of projects, from simple scripts to complex web applications. All are accessible through a web browser without the need for local software installation.
Getting Started with Replit
First, visit the official website https://replit.com/ and create an account there. You can use Google. GitHub, or your email.
How Much is Replit Costs
The “Starter” plan is free, but it’s very limited. If you want to try Replit’s full functionality, I recommend the “Replit Core” plan. It will cost you 25 USD/month for a monthly subscription or 120 USD/year (~10 USD/month) for a yearly one.
Think carefully about the option you select because no refund is available.
How to Create First Project in Replit
After creating an account and selecting the plan, you will be redirected to the main dashboard, where you can start work with Replit.
Remember that projects/repositories inside Replit are called “Repl”.
You can import an existing project from GitHub or create a new one. Both options are available on the main dashboard.
In this tutorial, we create a Repl from scratch. To do that, click on the “Create Repl” button.
Please remember that the free account doesn’t give you access to Replit Agent, so you must start by choosing a template for your project.
- Choose the technology you want to use. I’ll choose Next.JS
- Choose privacy mode. If you’re going to make it public, select “Public.”
- And give it a name
How to Run a Project in Replit
It will take a couple of seconds for Replit to create all the necessary files. Once it is finished, you can run the project by clicking the “Run” button.
Similar to other IDEs your files will be at the left sidebar and your code in the center.
Preview will be available in the sidebar, or you can open it in a separate tab by clicking this icon.
There are a lot of things available for you in your IDE mode. By clicking the “+” icon, you can open a new tab with the selected function from the list.
I recommend you try Replit AI. You can ask different questions about your application, and the AI will show you step-by-step instructions on how to add these changes.
Once you are happy with the result, you can deploy your app by clicking the “Deploy” button.
Then select a type of deployment and click deploy.
Depending on your application, it could take more than 10 minutes. Once the deployment is finished, you will see the success screen and application URL.
You can set up a custom domain of your application under the settings.
How to Use Replit Agent
What is Replit Agent
The Replit Agent is an AI-powered tool designed to assist users in building software projects. It interprets natural language prompts to help create applications from scratch, making software development more accessible to users of all skill levels. The Replit Agent acts as a pair programmer, configuring development environments, installing dependencies, and executing code.
How to Start
First, register on the Replit website if you haven’t done so yet. Then, on the homepage, you will see the Replit Agent input box. All you need to do is write your prompt in natural language.
For instance, “I want to input a stock symbol and get a summary of financial data. Give me a table and a chart tracking the stock price and other key financial information. Use data from Yahoo finance. Let me download the table data as a CSV.”
And click “Start building” button.
The Agent will summarize what it will build and suggest additional functionality that you can select for your application.
Once you are done, click “Approve plan & start.” After a few minutes, your application will be ready! Awesome right?! :)
You can use natural language to add functions or adjust them. All you need to do is describe your adjustment in the chat window and submit it to the Agent.
After you finish, you can deploy your application the same way as we did earlier.
As you can see, Replit is so simple and easy to use. I recommend watching my in-depth video with essential tips about Replit and its features.
