About bilingual writers in DEV

Hello, DEV community. I'd like to know your opinion on users that publish in two different languages, because, for several reasons irrelevant to this post, I want to start translating my own posts to my native language (Spanish), while keeping the versions in English.

At first I wanted to do it in a Spanish-speaking community, but unfortunately, I didn't found any in which I felt as comfortable as here. Also, from the comments on the following post, I discovered that there is already Spanish speakers publishing in DEV, using the #spanish tag.

However, doing this will mean that:

  • Non spanish speakers that follow me will have posts in their feed in a language they don't understand.
  • The posts on my profile will be mixed.

I know that none of this is really a big deal, but it is something I'd like to avoid as much as possible.

Therefore, I would like to kindly suggest a function to specify the language of a post, the possibility to filter posts by language and the possibility to do it in a user profile.

Until then, I would like to know what are your thoughts about this. I just skip posts in another language, but because they don't appear in my own notifications, from people I follow. Do you mind posts on your feed in other languages? Would you like to see a language filter in DEV? Or is it not worth it?

I considered it, the only downside is that then I couldn't have translated series, because a single post can only belong to one series, and if it belongs to "spanish" then it couldn't belong to another one.

Since there is no explicit support for internationalization on posts, the tags is all we have for now. I say that just putting the content out there for others to find is worth it.

There is hope, the dev team have discussions about this topic:

Forem: What internationalization features should we support?

It is great to see that! I didn't know it, I hope we can see it in the near future 🤞

Also, one reason to request it, is that even using tags, you can identify a post in another langage (for example if it has the #spanish tag) but you can't do it for english. It is normal, people won't just start using #english in every post they write.

Why is that your concern?

I think people prefer seeing posts in their language.
