Roblox Making Bank Means More Money for Devs

If you're thinking about getting started with game dev, it's not a bad idea to consider making content for Roblox, a platform that hosts user-created games. While most of these games are free to play, money can be made through in-game purchases... and apparently now Roblox plans to pay out more cash to devs than ever before.

From "Roblox jumps to over 150M monthly users, will pay out $250M to developers in 2020" on TechCrunch:

Gaming platform Roblox, which has seen a surge of use due to the coronavirus pandemic, now has over 150 million monthly active users, up from the 115 million it announced in February before the U.S.’s shelter-in-place orders went into effect. The company also said its developer community is on pace to earn over $250 million in 2020, up from the $110 million they earned last year.

These metrics and other company news were announced over the weekend at RDC, Roblox’s annual developer conference that was held virtually for the first time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, anybody have experience building games on Roblox? Ever played Roblox games? Have you ever created mods or content for any game before? How about monetized that content?

Certainly an interesting idea. My nephews would think I'm a rock star. They are obsessed with Roblox and Minecraft. They legit will sit there and watch other people play them on youtube for hours. There's probably more money to be made in making social content for kids than actually making Roblox content though, tbh.

Haha, that's a great point. The times they are a-changin'. I spent time with my niece and nephew recently and saw the same thing. They were all about YouTubing gamers & people playing with dolls/dinosaurs. I think we're in the wrong business... making bank by playing with toys in front of a web cam sounds pretty nice actually, haha.

I've been considering building stuff for roblox for a while now; the tooling seems superb in comparison to others and it has a very large community already. It does kind of have an image problem though, mostly due to the low average age of both the players and the content creators.

Heh - I used to make some toy games there. My games were always small and just for my personal friends, so I never got any payouts, but they've got a super nice system - easy to learn, especially for kids.

Oh totally! My nephew introduced me to Roblox and it definitely seems kid friendly. I like the Lego-like look of it all.

When I think about epic mods, I think about the story of Black Mesa... the remake of Half Life 1.
