We are delighted to introduce our next speaker, Nicolas Frankel, Developer Advocate at Hazelcast.
Developer Advocate with 15+ years experience consulting for many different customers, in a wide range of contexts (such as telecoms, banking, insurances, large retail, and public sector). Usually working on Java/Java EE and Spring technologies, but with focused interests like Rich Internet Applications, Testing, CI/CD, and DevOps. Currently working for Hazelcast. Also, double as a trainer and triples as a book author.
How did you become interested in Data?
I work for a company called Hazelcast. We have two products: one is an In-Memory Data Grid; the other, Jet, is a data streaming pipeline. I was basically thrown into the world of data, but I don't regret it at all.
What is your favorite project or a project that you’re particularly proud of?
My favorite project at the moment is Jet Trains, even if right now it has nothing to do with trains. When I joined Hazelcast, my colleague Neil Stevenson showed me a demo project of his. He had recorded the position of the train he was riding on in Italy some time ago and he had used Jet to display the position on the map. I felt it had a lot of unused potentials: the position markers were never removed, there was a single train, etc. So I thought about displaying many trains on the map and moving them "in real-time" (or close to, as there's no such thing as real-time).
I found a Swiss organization that provided data points of all Swiss public transportation as Open Data and built my demo around that. Unfortunately, it recently changed its format, so I'm now using a Californian one. My current task is to use one of the provided data files to move the bus along its route and not just in a straight line from one stop to the other. Help appreciated 😅
Are your projects similar, do they have common focus points, or they can be completely different?
My job at Hazelcast is Developer Advocate, so I'm trying to find new sources of data and new use-cases. The Jet Trains project is mainly about data pipelines and data visualization. Another demo I have is to stream JVM bytecode using data streaming to achieve continuous deployment in a Java application. In yet another one, I use Change-Data-Capture to move data between databases to achieve Zero-Downtime deployment. My talk at the conference is on how you can have an evergreen-cache.
Once you see the world in terms of data and events, your imagination is the limit!
Big data. Cloud data. ML, AI training data, and personally-identifying data. Data is all around us. The world is data-centric. What are some of the industries your clients come from?
A lot of our customers come from the finance industry and the use-case is fraud-detection in general. The idea is to check whether a transaction seems legit or not as fast as possible: having the data in-memory to access in the data pipeline helps a lot.

How did Covid-19 change data science/engineering in 2020?
I guess you probably now have a lot more data sets around Covid-19 😂
