heya everyone!
i have decided to move away from codecademy, since it didn't seem like a full-fledged learning system without paying for their pro plan. it seemed enticing but too expensive for what it is.
i have moved to learning along with the odin project's foundations course. so far, it looks excellent.
from now on, i'll provide updates in the comments, rather than editing the post.

update: i'm about half way through section two of eight of the responsive web design certification on freecodecamp, as per the odin project's discretion.
