One factor in any good idea is whether you can see yourself still being interested in it when you start facing the really deep challenges.

That's not necessarily where the ideas come from β€” there has to be an observation-of-the-environment factor, but it's a selection filter.

I've built (successful) SaaS/web apps for over 10 years. But most apply to apps for phone too. Some random thoughts:

  • I don't see my self as a developer, but rather a creator/entrepreneur;
  • I never think about ideas, but instead about problems that needs to be fixed or something that can be improved;
  • I don't keep track of these anymoreβ€”the really pressing/interesting ones will come up again and again;
  • I need to know at least a dozen people/companies that need what I am going to build;
  • I need a clear path to market and more marketing ideas than features.

If I’m out of ideas for creating app, I just hop on the App Store, look for popular mobile apps or games, and think about what new twist I can bring to a certain concept. For example, yesterday I released a game inspired by 2048, completely reworking the concept and visuals but keeping the core idea.
