Apple Vision Pro (Will it change the game?)

The Apple World Wild Developers Conference kicked off on Monday, June 5th. Many people have been waiting to see what Apple has cooking in the kitchen. There have been rumors for some time that Apple would release an AR/VR headset. Many companies like Sony, Meta, and others have tried, but left much to be desired. The conference opened with an intro from Tim Cook and then a slew of updates on the software and product line.

Apple released a new 15 inch MacBook Air with an M2 processor. They updated the Mac Studio and finally the Mac Pro. There was a sneak peek into iOS 17 and new Mac OS Sonoma. All these updates were nice, but everyone was still waiting for that “one more thing.”

That thing ladies and gentleman is the Apple Vision Pro. At first glance, the Vision Pro looks like a high end pair of ski goggles. What it truly will be is the game changer that the iPhone once was. Remember back in 2007, Apple released the iPhone. Many people were like who would pay $600 for a touch screen phone. Fast forward 16 years later and everyone is using a touch screen phone. We actually are paying a lot more than $600 for phones right now.

The Apple Vision Pro has that type of feel. It’s literally a MacBook Pro on your head. Imagine doing everything you can on your laptop with a headset. I believe this is the goal Apple is looking to achieve. Most companies started their AR/VR adventures in the gaming space. We have seen headset after headset literally flop. The price tag of the Vision Pro is very steep at $3499.

We need to understand that this device is not meant for the masses yet. It’s meant for the fan boys and girls. The rich who love toys. For the developers who will be building some amazing projects with this product. I think after a few years, there will be lower priced headsets, that the masses will then adopt.

If you truly follow Apple, they are all about building the ecosystem. Everything works with each other. The Vision Pro has its own operating system which over time will have new capabilities and features. Developers have a blank canvas to figure out how they can make the apps they now have, even more intuitive for the everyday user.

Just think about Jarvis in the Avengers movies. We are living in that time right now.

The Specs

Apple's new Vision Pro headset is powered by a unique dual-chip design. The M2 chip is responsible for running the operating system, executing advanced computer vision algorithms, and delivering stunning graphics. The R1 chip is specifically dedicated to processing input from the headset's cameras, sensors, and microphones, streaming images to the displays within 12 milliseconds — for a virtually lag-free, real-time view of the world.

The M2 Chip
The M2 chip is the latest generation of Apple's custom silicon. It is based on the same architecture as the M1 chip, but it has been significantly upgraded with new performance and efficiency cores, as well as a new unified memory architecture. The M2 chip is up to 18% faster than the M1 chip in terms of CPU performance, and up to 35% faster in terms of graphics performance. This makes the M2 chip ideal for running demanding virtual reality applications.

The R1 Chip
The R1 chip is a new custom chip designed specifically for the Apple Vision Pro headset. It is responsible for processing input from the headset's 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones. The R1 chip is able to stream images to the displays within 12 milliseconds, which is essential for providing a smooth and immersive virtual reality experience.

The Cameras
The Apple Vision Pro headset has 12 cameras that are used for a variety of purposes, including tracking the user's head and eye movements, providing pass-through viewing, and capturing 3D images of the user's surroundings. The cameras are also used for augmented reality applications, such as placing virtual objects in the real world.

The Apple Vision Pro will be a game changer in how we use technology today. Where others have failed, Apple will gain adoption. I would say in about 3 to 5 years, the world as we know it will change, and every company will follow the blueprint that Apple has laid out.

If you would like a more detailed post on the specs. Let me know in the comments.

See you on the other side
