I requested it. It was a combination of a renewed interest in programming and a need for a change of pace. I wanted less of the wide attention of management and more of the focus (at the best of times) of development.
I made the argument that my domain knowledge would compensate a bit for lack of experience and it has worked out so far. Challenging but fun!

That's awesome, kudos on the initiative! I'm sure your argument was true - software is more than just code. You experience is absolutely relevant.
