What Is CDS?

The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) is the UK’s updated system for managing import and export declarations, replacing the old CHIEF platform.

When Are Customs Declarations Needed?

For goods leaving England, Scotland, or Wales.
For shipments to non-EU locations from Northern Ireland.
For goods sent to the EU from Northern Ireland.

Why Was CHIEF Replaced?

CDS offers better flexibility and compliance with modern trade regulations, especially under the Union Customs Code (UCC).

Key Dates to Know

Exporters must fully switch to CDS by June 4, 2024.

Who Must Register?

All importers need CDS registration, even if using a customs broker.

What Needs to Be Declared?

Goods worth more than £873 or over 1000 kg.
Restricted items and those requiring licenses.
Essential Documents for Importing

EORI number, commercial invoice, packing list, and bill of lading.
Additional certificates may be needed, such as health or origin documents.

Duty-Free Limits

Up to £390 worth of goods can be brought in without paying duty; for private travelers, the limit is £270.
