What keeps you motivated to write?

I struggle to keep writing right now, so I wondered what strategies do you use to keep writing when that happens

  1. I want to help other people become better programmers. Particularly, write things in a way I would have liked to have seen when I was learning.
  2. I want to delete all my offline notes and have them as articles instead. I prefer my notes to be links to resources, rather than having my own offline text notes.

That generally keep me writing. I write because I want to write so I can do those things. It's like a pull, rather than pushing myself to write. It doesn't mean that sometimes I don't feel like it though. But I feel like not being in the mood for work is different to not liking the work you do, so to speak.

I am just gullible, every time I discover something what I think is interesting, which I want to share with someone, I write it. Keeps me from pestering people with it :)

Motivation will bring you so far. You need habits and systems. I simply sit down in the morning to write before I would start working. If I don't feel like... if I'm not motivated... who cares? That's part of my daily routine.

I know it's not very glamorous, but that's how I've been posting an article every single week for more than 4 years.

Thanks a lot for your comment Sandor, I don't have a dedicated time to write, I will focus on fixing that.

I would say, just by thinking the magic of it. I mean, I know each time I have to write something, I have a general idea of it, but I know there will be some kind of magic that will operate, sort of a flow or inspiration that will come as Iโ€™m writing that goes through me and on the screen or paper Iโ€™m doing.

Sometimes I amaze myself reading stuff I wrote weeks or months ago and then I know the magic did happen again.

Writing code or writing about tech? It's not clear what you mean.

Good point, I meant writing about tech.

I find that to write about tech, I need to understand the topic well. Writing helps me to clarify doubts and plug gaps in my understanding. To write well, research is important. So it improves my research skills and learn how to read papers written by others. I am the founder of Devopedia. I used to previously blog at Wordpress.com but these days I write mostly on Devopedia since it's fixed structure helps both readers and writers.
