What are your best tips for starting well in a new job?

Hello friends. I'm happy to start a new job soon πŸŽ‰

I'm also a bit anxious.

In the past, I had been overwhelmed by all the unknown that comes with a new job: unknown people, unknown expectations, unknown tools, unknown processes, unknown codebase, unknown libraries or even programming language, unknown unknowns.

What are some of your best tips to be more prepared to handle all of this?

Congrats! Do lots of research and ask tons of questions. Have your team help you prioritize what you need to learn first and how the learning / onboarding process works. Don't try to do everything at once!

It sounds simple but I try to talk to everyone I'm going to be dealing with often (or at least everyone in your team) in the first week, even if its just to say hello

If you don't then it can become awkward a few weeks later when you say "Hey, I'm the new person whose been here a month but I haven't bothered to speak to you yet"

Hello,

I had the same feeling when I started new job 2 years ago. I was overwhelmed by not knowing the product and the technologie used.
I guess it s normal to have those thoughts but don't let be an obstacles for your know job.
Tips that I have tried and worked for me are :

  • Ask a lot of questions at the beginning and have a notebook (or use an online tool google doc; oneNote or other) to write down all things that has been said to u, we tend to forget quickly at beginning because we have a lot of new things that we learn.
  • Give propositions as much as u can, it s good to have a new eye on the product/service
  • Take some responsabilities by your self, don't wait until they ask u to do, so when ever you have a free time at work, take a subject and work on it.

Good Luck and don't forget that they have chosen u because you are competent otherwise they would chose an other person.
