Generative AI is also present in the musical field

In this time of Music Day, when bewitching melodies (or not) will resonate in the streets of the whole world, a major innovation illuminates our musical landscape !

Artificial intelligence has recently taken a giant step forward, with generative AI being made available to the general public. So far, we've had access to text generation (ChatGPT), image generation (Midjourney, Dall-E) or specialized code generation (Github Autopilot).

Today, it's the turn of music, with tools such as MusicLM, Mubert, Soundraw, MusicGen and Boomy, which I've chosen to illustrate this article.

The group that revive Oasis by musical AI

AISIS revamps the Oasis group via generative AI

A song by Oasis rekindled hope among fans for a reunion of the band. “We were tired of waiting for Oasis to eventually reform. (...) So, we decided to train an AI on the vocal model of Liam Gallagher, and we applied it to some melodies originally composed for our short-lived but highly sentimental band, Breezer”, explains Bobby Geraghty, singer and producer of Breezer, with the British daily newspaper The Guardian. This stunning production can be listened to here.

What if we also composed on Boomy

The principle of Boomy is that you can create your first music in seconds. The AI will instantly create music by clicking on “Create”, which will be “original”, which we can then edit and customize according to our wishes. Attractive, but my ear as a musician is still skeptical, which is why I wanted to try the experiment with you.

The first step is to choose a style from among those on offer :

Boomy : create a song

Then comes the song, automatically generated in a few seconds, which you can rework: adding vocal elements, rewriting, rearranging or adding instruments.

Boomy : customize a song

I share with you songs that I was able to create in a few minutes, thanks to this AI, to accompany my summer afternoon: Electro #1, Electro #2.

For the personalization part, it is still relatively limited and it takes time to be generated, but creative possibilities are still offered.

The platform encourages streaming sharing, creators publish their songs on Discord and are paid when they are listened to:

Some of these tracks are already available on Spotify, so don't be surprised if your next summer hit is AI-generated.

Conclusion

The discovery of generative AIs, especially in the musical field, is still in its infancy. And yet, we manage to produce some rather interesting things. Imagine the evolution that this can have in a few years, and the impact that this will have on professions in the field of musical creation.

As AI continues to evolve and grow, it is essential that we adapt and embrace these new possibilities.

Music softens morals so let's continue to make it evolve !
