Introduction
Responsive web design is the practice of designing web pages that adapt to different screen sizes and resolutions. This means that your website will look good on any device, whether it’s a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
In this article, we will discuss how to create responsive web design with CSS.
We will cover topics such as:
- Using media queries
- Creating fluid layouts
- Using flexbox
- Using grid
Using Media Queries
Media queries are a way to tell the browser to change the way a web page is displayed based on the screen size. For example, you can use media queries to make sure that your website’s text is readable on a small screen.
Here is an example of a media query:
@media (max-width: 768px) {
.container {
width: 100%;
}
}
This media query will tell the browser to change the width of the .container element to 100% when the screen width is less than or equal to 768px.
Creating Fluid Layouts
Fluid layouts are layouts that change their size and proportions to fit the screen size. This is done by using percentages instead of fixed widths and heights.
Here is an example of a fluid layout:
.container {
width: 100%;
max-width: 1200px;
margin: 0 auto;
}
This code will create a container that is 100% wide and has a maximum width of 1200px. The container will also be centered on the page.
Using Flexbox
Flexbox is a new CSS layout property that makes it easy to create responsive layouts. Flexbox allows you to define the direction of the flexbox container, the alignment of the flex items, and the justify-content and align-items properties.
Here is an example of a flexbox layout:
.container {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
justify-content: center;
align-items: center;
}
This code will create a flexbox container that has its flex items aligned in a column and its content centered.
Using Grid
Grid is another new CSS layout property that makes it easy to create responsive layouts. Grid allows you to define the rows and columns of a grid container, as well as the width and height of the grid items.
Here is an example of a grid layout:
.container {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(2, 1fr);
grid-template-rows: repeat(2, 50px);
}
This code will create a grid container with two columns and two rows. Each column will be 1fr wide and each row will be 50px high.
Using Existing CSS Frameworks
For those looking to expedite the process, existing CSS frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation offer built-in methods for achieving responsive web design. These frameworks provide pre-designed components and responsive grids that can significantly speed up development. Leveraging these frameworks can simplify the implementation of the methods discussed in this article, making developers' lives easier and projects more efficient.
Conclusion
By following these tips, you can create responsive web design with CSS. Responsive web design is an important skill for any web developer, and it will help you create websites that look good on any device.

Nice post friend, but you do not need to bult it from the scratch.
Just use one of CSS frameworks that exits for example:
1) Bootstrap
2) Semantic
3) Many more...
You do not need Reinvent a wheel.
This is very much true, in practice we should never do unless we see huge advantages doing so.
Or you can fix something that is already exists and make better....:)
Fixing is needed for mistakes :)
Updated the post.
Nice bite-sized explanation on responsive design! I'd also add the use of clamp() as another way to enhance the fluidity and responsiveness of the page.
Thanks @efrenmarin .
Valid suggestion, will cover this as well in some other Article.
