Facebook REBRANDS to Meta? 😲 Does it mean FAANG is now MANGA?

So if you haven't already heard, Facebook is now called Meta. An interesting twist so head down to the comments and let me know what you think.

But the sarcastic and mischievous one in me couldn't help but have a few little digs πŸ˜‰:

The rebrands logo is one of the saddest attempts at a logo I have seen in a while, like the love child of Virgin Media and Visual Studio but after it has been told it can't have icecream.

Virgin Media and Visual Studio logos with arrows pointing to the new Meta logo which looks like a sad infinity symbol in Blue

Or maybe the inspiration came from Charlie Brown?

Charlie Brown crying with the

The new name is just going to make conversations fraught with accidental mentions of the evil corporation with a new name and make my conversations with clients horrendous.

Me: "We need to set a meta description"
Client: "Don't worry, I have a meta profile"
Me: "No, we need to set your meta tags"
Client: "It is fine, I know how to tag people".

And now you can't work at FAANG companies anymore, you work at MANGA companies?

I mean, I tagged this post as "meta" originally - how confusing is that going to be?

Or what will now happen to meta.stackexchange.com, is it going to get over-run with confused people looking for help uploading Cat pictures?

I am just being silly, just want to see what people think?

Seriously though, what do people think of the new logo, the new name, the cost of such a rebrand and why?

My only theory on the why is that they are that desperate to get Gen Z involved they think a rename is the only way, will it work or will it just alienate their current user base?

Over to you!

Meta is to Facebook as Alphabet is to Google, so surely it's MAAAN?

Doesn't make sense this post FAANG also didn't change after Google moved under Alphabet and now Facebook is also keeping its name the name Facebook doesn't change they are now just under Meta same same as Google is under Alphabet.

Also do you know the worst part of all this? My old post no longer makes sense, and I was particularly proud of my acronym too!! 🀣

IMO we shouldn't even use FAANG, FAMGA, and other such acronyms unless we're talking about stocks. They don't even come from tech. They come from the financial sector and TV pundit Jim Cramer. Although it's an improvement over "Big Four" or "Big Five" which can be confused with the same term used for accounting companies, they still have very limited use outside of the original financial sector usage.

Besides, the tech sector changes so fast the acronyms continue to go out of date. The five highest revenue generating tech companies don't include Netflix at the moment. And many have even argued that these are not tech companies at all or that all companies are tech companies now. For example, Google and Facebook are ads companies. Apple is a consumer appliance company. Amazon is a retailer.

I do agree, I just like using common vernacular (spelling?) and it has become well known in the DEV community.

As you said, it is just shorthand for "one of the big companies" nowadays as it changes so quickly.

I think some of the silliness of this post was lost, as none of it was meant to be overly serious and more just a bit of fun / a way to find out what people think the reasoning is behind the rebrand!

And as for companies not being tech companies - I agree there too, it is just like McDonalds - they aren't a "restaurant" / fast food company, they are actually a real-estate company if you look closely at their business model!

I mean, I tagged this post as "meta"

No more, the tag is gone πŸ˜†

I removed it and added "originally" to that sentence a couple of minutes back, perhaps it didn't update immediately.

I realised that I would likely get some poor DEV employee trying to work out what problem needs solving with the platform so I got rid of it (as I hate abusing tags, even though it is sometimes necessary!).

I've heard that they are just rebranding other products and probably the facebook app will remain with the same logo? Something like the Alphabet company and Google thing

Yeah I do believe initially it will be just a holding company, but where they take it, who knows?
