The DigitalOcean Community Weekly: OTRS, PostgreSQL for Rails, updates to the Community & much more!

Welcome to The DOCOM Weekly, your weekly digest featuring some of the best content published in and around the DigitalOcean Community last week.

Hello! I’m Matt Cowley, Community Manager with the Community team. Today's roundup includes the Open source Ticket Request System, PostgreSQL for Ruby on Rails, new updates to the Community & much more!

Without further ado, here are this week's featured posts:

How To Use PostgreSQL with Your Ruby on Rails Application on Ubuntu 18.04

In a previous tutorial, we went through the steps to get Ruby on Rails ready to go on Ubuntu 18.04. In this tutorial, Mitchell Anicas and Timothy E. Nolan look to keep your Ruby on Rails app on track by backing it with a PostgreSQL database.

How To Set Up a Help Desk System with OTRS on Ubuntu 18.04

In this great tutorial, Vadym Kalsin walks us through the process of getting a free and open source customer ticket system running on your Ubuntu 18.04 server. Vadym wrote this as part of our Write for DOnations program, helping to support the Free Software Foundation.

The OTRS Main Agent Screen

How To Install an Apache, MySQL, and PHP (FAMP) Stack on FreeBSD 12.0

Get your FreeBSD server ready to serve content on the web with the FAMP stack installation guide by Mitchell Anicas and Albert Valbuena - covering Apache, MySQL and PHP, this tutorial was written as part of our Write for DOnations program and helped to support the Free and Open Source Fund.

Featured Q&A

These are some of our favourite questions (and answers) from our Community in the last week:

DO on the Web

The DigitalOcean community is larger than our Community website, so here's some additional content that deserves love too:

Kali Linux in the DigitalOcean Cloud

Thomas d'Otreppe wrote a great blog post on the Kali website walking you through how to get up and running on a DigitalOcean Droplet using Kali Linux.

PowerToFly - How To Manage A Remote Team & Thrive In A Remote-Friendly Culture

PowerToFly hosted an amazing live video chat with our Director of Engineering, Limor Bergman Gross, on how DigitalOcean effectively manages remote teams and ensure that the remote culture we have thrives.

Hosting a Django website with DigitalOcean

Mitch Tabian shared an excellent video this week that goes over the full process of hosting your own Django website with a DigitalOcean Droplet. He walks you through every step from creating a DigitalOcean account to the final live site.

Community Updates

As a community manager at DigitalOcean, I get to watch (and help) as we continue to develop our Community website to make the experience better for everyone. This week we launched a set of fabulous new updates for the Community website and we hope you'll like them as much as we do!

  • This week we polished up the design and layout of our tutorials pages, such as on How To Use PostgreSQL with Your Ruby on Rails Application on Ubuntu 18.04.

    • The table of contents for the tutorial has been cleaned up to work better with longer tutorials.
    • The right-hand sidebar now provides additional suggest tutorials based on what you're currently reading.
    • We've worked some design magic to clear up the spacing and make the feel of the main tutorial content more visually appealing.
  • Comment threads in the Q&A now have vertical traces on the left-hand side so that you can more easily visually identify where you are within a reply chain. An example of this can be seen with the thread spiralling off Bobby's answer on Why is ufw blocking https access to nginx?.

  • All of the Community team avatars on the Community homepage now link to our profiles so you can find out more about us easily and see what we're up to on the site.

  • We've also worked our socks off to make the Community landing page perform much better and load faster for everyone.

Marketplace - Kubernetes Monitoring Stack (BETA)

This week, our amazing Product & Marketplace teams have also launched the first 1-Click App on the DigitalOcean Marketplace that runs on our #DOKS platform. The Kubernetes Monitoring Stack, which is currently in beta, distils operational knowledge of integrating Prometheus, Grafana, and metrics-server for deployment onto DigitalOcean Kubernetes clusters.

Hatch by DigitalOcean at RISE Hong Kong

Some of our brilliant community team, Frédéric Harper and Samantha Tse, along with many other colleagues from the Hatch team will be at the RISE conference in Hong Kong next week. If you're in the area, we'd love to say hi and talk all things startups!

Happy hacking, and see you all next week!
