an astronaut🚀, a cook👩🍳, a dancer🕺 (maybe not this one), a policeman👮, a footballer⚽ (only if I lose my brain)...
So, do you understand what we're going to talk about here?
Hello World!
My last #healthydebate generated really lots of interactions 🥳! So I decided to create another one, it feels so good to talk with other devs!
The question of the day is: "If you weren't a dev, you'd be a..."
Question time: <-- To help you answer the big question above
- When you were a child, what did you dream of being when you grew up?
- What are the three jobs you would never do?
- What do you consider yourself good at? So what other job could you be successful in?
- If you were forced to change your career, you would be a...
Ps: Hey, if you're not a full-time dev (yet), what is your current job? If so, are you working on becoming a programmer?

Detective! Love puzzle solving and thinking outside the box 😎
Film director 🎬🙃
I'd be a savage 😎
You know you can be a dev and a savage at the same time? :D
so they're not the same thing??
❤️
Scientist? Inventor? Anything which involves creating, like programming
Designer is a beautiful "creation" job that doesn't seem considered by many here...
What do you think about it?
absolutely!
dev.to/michelledev3/how-do-people-...
Good one, but I'm not really good at art
aaah, too bad, but maybe in your next life... 🙃
Thanks! I was never really good at art too. Maybe I didn't try hard enough 😉.
Scientist? If I were smart enough LOL ...
Hmmm...tough one. Probably something with languages (human languages). I already speak several so why not.
Jobs I despise would be:
What languages do you speak?
I'm too in love with languages, I speak four for now (and started learning a little about the fifth), but I hope to reach six one day 🚀.
Well, as it stands I am fluent in English, Dutch, Papiamentu (the language spoken in Curacao, where I live) and Spanish (my native language). When I say fluent I mean I can read it, speak it and write it. I also know a little French and have been trying to pick up German too (by the way, it looks and sounds nothing like Dutch! 😂).
Drug lord
ha ha ha :)
🙃
I really wanted to be an actor when I was little. I think actor, teacher, and doctor were the few jobs I knew at that time.
And it's not that I had a thing for acting. I just wanted to be on TV and be a star.
Didn't take long to grow out of it. LOL!
I'm good at solving problems and explaining stuff.
Well, IDK what I'd do if I were forced to change my career today. But if I could, I would've loved to be
Panda caretaker or a zoologist.
Because I love animals
Professional figure skater.
I learned roller skating as a kid and loved it. I used to roller skate at home all the time - from the time I woke up to going back to sleep, I'd keep them on.
Sadly, it isn't a thing in India. So I never considered it a career option.
In fact, until I watched Yuri on Ice! many years later, I didn't even know pro-skating was a thing 😭😭
Physicist/Mathematician.
I had great physics and maths teachers during my junior college. And I was aspiring to be a theoretical physicist for a brief period of time. Somehow, I didn't go that path.
Thanks for your comment ❤️.
A friend of mine would like to become a pro skater, I know it's very difficult because it doesn't really exist as a job. To live by doing it you must necessarily become famous enough to have sponsors. Although I must say that skating is growing more and more among young peoples...
Yes exactly! I hope it keeps growing.

Please wish your friend all the best from my side. 😊
hahaha, he will appreciate it for sure
When you were a child, what did you dream of being when you grew up?
Astronaut, or superhero.
(Before I found out that space is dangerous and inhospitable. And being a superhero would likely be a very short career.)
What are the three jobs you would never do?
Astronaut, superhero, or talk show host.
What do you consider yourself good at? So what other job could you be successful in?
Analytical thinking. Logistics.
If you were forced to change your career, you would be a...
Well, everything else being equal, and all said and told, I'd rather be rich than ugly.
Given that, my career would be indolent nouveau riche.
Although I don't understand why you quit the superhero career, Thanks for your comment @eljayadobe ❤️.
re: Superhero career
I'll direct your attention to: The Boys, Invincible, The Specials, Special, Super, and Deadpool.
I wanted to be a gamedev, so I'm not too far off. 🙃 I'm still planning to dig into gamedev as well.
People always thought I was gonna be an illustrator just because I could draw. My issue with drawing is that I need to be in the right mood AND be motivated to draw. I'd just be too unreliable. Doing coding was simply a much better choice because I basically enjoy it every day. 😂
So even if I weren't a dev I'd still not do illustration. Maybe I would be a webdesigner instead. I also absolutely loved physics at school, and heavily considered pursuing physics at one point, so perhaps it could've gone that way, like becoming a physicist for crime investigation.
I'm still very happy to be a dev though.
Thank you for your comment ❤️.
Seeing what you say the process of creating a video game, especially the complex 3d ones, seems to match what you like. It requires a lot of graphics (illustration), programming, and an interest in physics is always an important plus.
Also, for the webdev and web designer (maybe not for the physicist) it's not so difficult to learn/start doing it. Even not at the level of work right away, but just to see what you can do / if you enjoy it. If you have the time to do so, it costs you nothing.
My current fulltime career is webdev so I'm aware of the things that are involved. 😄 I also did some freelancing that involved designing but I just always feel like something's not... right, even though I got all the fundamental design basics right. I definitely just need some more practise I think. I do feel I get better with each project I make.
When I say webdesigner as a different career, I'm referring to investing 100% in that and just knowing the basics of dev. Even if I were to invest more in webdesign now, I'm still first and foremost a dev and I'm not thinking of changing careers. 🙂
Graphic designer
That's a job that I would like to do as well, especially being also web designer. The problem is finding the time to learn...
I'm a consultant who learned to code on the job. I guess if I ever were anything else, I'd go for freelancing and, if time permits, part-time alpacca farmer. Perhaps full time some day. Seriously, those animals are the best
If I had another life to live as a physicist, I would work on an alternative means of propulsion in space. Not like the space-time warping kind everyone salivates over. Rather a non-relative method that doesn't require bringing all our own propellant.
Real Estate Broker or something like that maybe... 😂
😂😂
I would Work in the Biotech sector. It was my intended field of study but the wait time was 4 years (at that time the course enrolement was nationally controlled and related to your school grade) so I looked at media informatics and stumbled into this field by chance and since I got deeper into software engineering 10years ago I have no Intentions to leave.
Physicist,Mathematician, inventor , I love creating stuff , maybe create innovative stuff products or even make films.
Jobs I despise would be:
Lots of devs are mathematicians and/or creative too, especially the front-end devs. What kind of dev are you?
Warehouse worker like I am right now.
It's the most difficult job I've ever had and if you've never worked a blue collar job you probably can't comprehend the pound of flesh that goes into the work. I know I didn't!
Professional gambler - specific poker player. It's a fascinating mix of math and psychology.
And, in the same vein, I would be anyalying numerous stats across major sports to place 'investment wagers' in those areas - but that takes a lot of time and dedication to do a full and proper analysis and/or to develop a 'system.'
Probably a musician or singer. I enjoy singing and playing guitar in my spare time - these are my favorite hobbies.
What kind of music do you play?
Probably electrical engineer, building stuff
Construction worker
Why?
Building things is very rewarding. I like coding too, but there's this never ending quality to it that is unsatisfying to me. In construction you walk onto an empty property and leave behind a home. A home that will likely outlast you.
It's true, not all software projects are equal. But how many of us are creating software as useful or meaningful as building a home for someone to raise a family in?
I've spent most of Covid working as a general labourer and plan on changing to construction full time. I will continue coding. It's fun to make a computer do what you want. But I've spent 9 years sitting on my arse for 8hrs a day, I don't want to spend the next 20/30 years like that.
Also, everyone I know that makes good money, own a home, have a good work/life balance, they're all in construction.
I'd be a cook in a sushi-bar 🍣
I would not succeed in that, simply because the sushi would never reach the customer 😄
Yeah but after a couple hours you can begin serving😆
An artist or model 😛
What kind of artist?
I create paintings. It is on my Instagram. You can check it out here 😊
instagram.com/aneeqa_khan_01/
Possibly a cook
🤣 it seems like a witch making some potions
a soldier. I was supposed to wait a year after highschool to be qualified to apply at the military academy; I was 16, and the recruitment age was 17. but my parents doesn't want me to slack for a year so they forced me to take univerisity entrance exams and I passed on one, and off I go to college and leave the dream on a military academy behind.
A Photographer~ I already do it in my free time and I even hesitated going full time once.
Do you already have a social account on which you put your photos?
instagram.com/crimson_med
A graphic designer or may be a drawing artist.
What do you think of web designer? It's something all front-end dev should learn, or at least the basics.
Ummmmmmm Yes, According to me web design should be the first step for all front-end dev
Probably a game streamer , tried it once, machine gave up on me so went back to the other hobby. development.
What videogames?
I play stealth games mostly.
Assassins creed, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid, Thief, Dishonoured etc etc etc
Architect I think, in theory I studied the right subjects before university. Had I focused more on my creative side a little more, I think I would have gone that route rather than web development.
And why did you find yourself being a developer?
Not sure, I really liked the idea of both but I guess I had a real interest in computers so webdev made more sense at the time. Would I choose that path if I could do it again? Probably but it’s a tight call 😆
A geneticist, I love genetics 🔬
Absolutely yes!!!
Whish I grew somplace far away and had skills to be a farmer or such. But not industrial one just living of the land
It's amazing how many devs want to be farmers, I never expected that. Why?
I "hate" my job, technology, and pretty much all of the things I considered "advanced" life. Not one single thing is sustainable or "green". Realistically most of the things we consider to be good for providing help to others are actually adding fuel to the fire not much more than that. But it's grey not black so it's more of a I'm sick of it rather than it's all doomed. I really don't see that much purpose for many of technologies as they produce more issues in the background than serve their purposes so it's more related to consumer approach and capitalism rather than tech itself. I dislike cities now and it's only getting worse.
Hitman
I would be a police officer today, chasing bastards and solving crimes.
I guess a writer.
A Marine Biologist
🌊🦑🦐🦞🦀🐚🐙🦈🐡🐠🐟🐬🐋🐳
I was Law Enforcement, and Military service (USAF)... Not those again. Probably get into CyberSecurity and pentesting (especially red team, physical stuff)
Very likely a web designer. I really love doing it.
If I had to be completely away from comptuers... probably something related to political science? 🤔 Not exactly sure.
I would be a human being
I can't decide on if I would go into culinary or into physical therapy 😅
May a graphic designer, or a videographer for sure. i do freelancing in that now, but my primary job is developer. 🤘🤘
Race car driver of some sort or an uber driver 😂
A novelist! 📓📕
Nice, what kind of novels would you write?
Detective fiction mostly
Love the question 👍
Probably a doctor, or a linguist.
A store owner selling animal foods and equipments to farmers
It's amazing how many devs want to be farmers, I never expected that. Why store owner selling animal foods?
Because farmers never do one thing. They will always have crop and animals here and there.
a pop singer if I have a good voice and knowledge of music and singing
I would be a photographer! I already do it part time!
Two times is better than one!
Mathematician
The worst designer LoL
I'd probably be a barista. I love coffee to much.
So maybe you're interested in this discussion about coffee + devs:

I was a 3D artist before, working in the games industry.. Was also very nice.. I think if ive had never learn to love to become a developer, I've would have been stayed that..
