i just started my first open sourced contribution on github yesterday! i didn't do something big in that contribution, just added my name on the first-contributions github repo. it's very unnecessary. but if you don't start with small things, how do you think you could start with big things?

It's okay to ask for help and people do not mind taking the time to teach or educate. Many of us write code, but there are many ways you can add value that are only programming. Reach out to others like mentors or peers, and you might be shocked that most people are generous with their time. If they don't have time, then move on and be grateful.
Don't give up. It's easy to look at development as this monolithic undertaking and get overwhelmed, but don't let that scare you away. Take each piece step by step and try to improve 1% every day that you write code. Reflect on what you did at the end of each week and just look at how much you have improved, line by line, day by day, week by week. Soon that monolith will look like a small hill that you're climbing with thousands of other people who are there with you on your journey to guide you and assist you in any way they can.
