I usually say "dollar", but I rarely ever have to say "dollar" as it's implied by the context of the discussion. In your example, I wouldn't say, "dollar div dot HTML" but rather "replace the contents of the div" as the listener should already be familiar with how the syntax looks in jQuery. Additionally, by speaking at a higher level you train your mind to think about problems generally, rather than through the lens of a particular library.

 

Don't mind me the "s div dot html" was overly expressed.
