This week in DevRel: A Technical Community Builder's Experience

As a Technical Community Builder (TCB) on a Developer Relations team, I'm working on a variety of different things. For those who are interested in making their way into the field, I want to share some of the things I do and answer any questions you might have about what it means to be a TCB.

Creating a Forum

Each week looks a little bit different, but this week focused on a new project: building out our forum.

In the last year, we explored several different forum options and considered rolling out our custom forum. But then something really exciting happened: GitHub discussions were enabled on an organizational level 🎉

We've been using GitHub discussions for a while at Virtual Coffee, and I've enjoyed revisiting the posts, re-engaging conversations, and getting answers to some of our FAQs.

When I came across the GitHub Community, this seemed like a good solution for what we're working on at Deepgram. And so the Deepgram Community was born along with accompanying discussions.

Along with this, I planned out content for the forum for the future to ensure consistent scheduling.

Hackathons

We're super excited to be preparing to do more hackathons (coming soon!), but good hackathons require good processes and communication. As we work our way up to implementing the hackathons, I needed to update rules and processes and identify any issues we haven't discussed.

Blogging

Ok, so this one hasn't gone as planned. I'm working on a blog post, but I'm having a hard time getting the code working. So I'm spending a lot of time reading documentation and blog posts to help me break through my issues and get that post written.

Meetings

This is actually a pretty slow week for meetings 🎉 I'm super grateful that I've had large chunks of time to help me dive deeper into work and feel like I've made progress. We have a weekly developer relations meeting, and it's always great to see my teammates.

Content Planning

There will always be content to be created, events to be organized, and processes to be documented. For example, I have an idea for a 4-hour Twitter Space with a handful of guests, so I'm drafting the topic, brainstorming guest ideas, and finding the space to do it.

This was the main workload from this week, but I also spent time engaging in communities, learning more about community building, and learning more about Machine Learning and Data Science.

If you have any questions about TCB, let me know!
