Week 1 of TaskForce 5.0 reflections

Remember in school how we had some boring classes where everyone was dozing off or day dreaming about their next adventure?

This past week was nothing like that, everyone was super engaged and couldn't wait to find out was coming next. What's even better is that the organizing team did not disappoint. Just check out this tweet that was announcing the taskforce. They delivered on the cool part.

The first activity was a game that helped engage us and helped us realize the power of communication.

Imagine playing a game as a team but not being able to communicate verbally. Yeah, that was hard. We will come back to my reflections on it later.

The second iteration of the game where we were allowed to communicate verbally taught us that even then some of us lacked proper communication skills that help work in teams.

This is a very important skill for developers and many other people, because the world is moving towards a remote-first workplace and being able to communicate and collaborate remotely defines a successful team.

Some things that can help in working remotely are listed below:

  • Being prepared before joining a meeting
  • Joining a meeting early
  • Muting microphones to avoid noise if you are not talking.

Lastly, my reflection on the game is that there are some things that we take for granted such as being able to communicate verbally or even being able to see. We should work to be inclusive of people with disabilities.

As software developers we should create software that includes people with disabilities. For example, blind people should be able to interact with our software.
