Week 4 of TaskForce 5.0 reflections

Have you ever thought that you are good at something, like cooking or driving, then someone mentions a tip that blows your mind?

That was basically every single day for me this past week. From technical things like app localization to more general knowledge like S.M.A.R.T goals.

Let's dive deeper into the lessons I learnt.

App localization

As a software engineer, I've been building software that can be used but it had some limitations that I did not think of before meeting some brilliant minds from Code of Africa and Awesomity Labs.

One question I could have asked myself is, can this app be used by people who do not speak English? This language barrier excludes millions of people from apps I've built in the past.

The solution is quite simple. App Localization

App Localization

App localization enables users from different cultures and languages to interact with the application thus allowing a developer or company to reach a global audience.

Setting up localization is very easy and there are thousands of articles on the internet explaining how to do it in your own technology.

Goals

As people, we should all have goals. If you don't, please tell me how you find the will to work everyday.

Now the question is, are the goals SMART?

A goal being SMART does not mean it is intelligent or that it has a degree from university. SMART is an acronym

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time-based

SMART goals

Personally, I had some goals that were not SMART like wanting a Lamborghini in the next year. This goal was not attainable in that time frame but a person can still dream, right?

A more suitable short-term goal is getting a better laptop in 2 months. This goal meets the criteria of a SMART goal like being relevant to bigger goals in my career and being attainable since I can afford it.

Summary

This week we learnt some very important lessons like we have seen above.

If you are a software developer, try your best to make sure your software is inclusive of all kinds of people. This will also help you achieve your business goals easily.

And as a person, make sure you have goals and that they are SMART.

Those were some of the lessons I took from this past week in the TaskForce.

So far, the TaskForce has been eye-opening in many areas professionally and personally. I can't wait to share lessons from next week.
