Building the Next Great MMORPG: A Community-Driven Approach Inspired by Dofus/Wakfu

Hey Dev.to community!

I'm Aymen, and I’m on a mission to create a unique MMORPG that brings back the magic and excitement we used to feel in games like Dofus and Wakfu. With today’s MMO market feeling a bit stagnant, it’s time to ask: what are these games missing, and how can we bring something new and meaningful to the table?

Why Aren't MMOs Thriving Like They Used To?
Over the years, MMOs have shifted focus, moving away from the social, exploration, and immersion aspects that made them so compelling. Today’s games often prioritize fast rewards and solo experiences, leaving behind the deep community and strategy-based gameplay that used to define the genre. It’s clear that players crave a return to immersive, shared worlds—spaces where each player’s presence feels significant, and every interaction matters.

Introducing Fupon – A Vision for the Future of MMOs
My idea, Fupon, is an MMORPG project that aims to combine the best aspects of classic games like Dofus/Wakfu with modern game design principles. I’m aiming for:

2D characters in 3D environments: Blending classic, nostalgic visuals with immersive spaces.
Meaningful player interactions: Focusing on community, collaboration, and strategy.
Subscription-based model: Providing a more sustainable revenue path that puts the player experience first, rather than relying on aggressive monetization.
Where You Come In – Feedback, Ideas, and Community!
I believe that building a truly impactful game takes a community, so I’d love to hear your thoughts:

What’s missing in today’s MMOs? Which features or mechanics would you love to see reimagined?
What inspires you about games like Dofus or Wakfu?
Are there any unique elements from older MMOs that would be worth reviving in a new way?
If you’re interested in game development, art, world-building, or storytelling, let’s talk! I'm looking to connect with others who are excited to explore what an ideal MMORPG could look like and, if it sparks a passion, perhaps even help bring this vision to life. Even if it’s just as a hobby, I believe we can create something truly memorable together.

EDIT: I’m especially open to beginners who are willing to learn, explore, and grow together. I believe that building a truly impactful game takes a community of passionate learners who are dedicated to improving their skills along the way. Whether you're interested in game development, art, world-building, or storytelling, I’d love to connect and support each other in learning and creating something unique.

Let's discuss in the comments or connect—can’t wait to hear what you think!
