I completed a telecommunications engineering degree and it's totally worth it. I'm most of the concepts I learned about while other people with a "lighter" education don't have as many tools as I have. When all you got is a hammer, all problems look like nails right?
Though a few things
In France, education is free (or even pays you)
I get the feeling that the "engineering" education in France covers a broader spectrum of things compared to the US. I didn't learn much about code there, I learned a little bit about mathematics and physics and signal theory and management and communication and so forth
Also I met my best friends during that time and overall that's pretty important.
