windows 7 dying banner

Microsoft has announced that it would be ending it extended support for its Windows 7 operating system (OS) on January 14, 2020. and recently that paid windows 7 extended security updates (ESU) would be provided through January 2023. according to Microsoft, the ESU would be sold per device basis. What that means is that if you have 10 windows 7 PCs, you’d have to purchase 10 ESUs licenses (As if that’s not how Microsoft licenses have worked from time immemorial). And to cap it off Microsoft style, the price of the license will increase each year. So if you want to keep your win 7 system up to 2023 you’d have to pay; before Microsoft will finally pull the plug on the OS. Using the OS after this date would be doing so at your own risk.

No doubt Windows 7 is one of the most successful OS that has come from the stable of Microsoft. And many people fell in love with it – even me. In fact, it was the reason Microsoft re-designed windows 8 into windows 10 while returning the user-interfaces of 7, after a slow adoption of Windows 8. as a result of this,`1 window 10 became a very bloated OS.

Soinstead of moving your systems to the next in Microsoft’s product(i.e. 10); I would suggest trying/switching to Linuxso some very cogent reasons.

Windows10 Bloated.

Windows 10 is very bloated with many unnecessary features that undermine the security of your PC. Like data leaks to Microsoft, automatic intrusive ads and updates among others. Many windows users, because of this, still prefer windows 7 to 10. A case in point is that even though Windows 10 has been released for quite some years now, the largest installed windows OS out there is still windows 7.

HardwareSupport

Windows 10 is very resource-intensive. So for it to function optimally you might need a system upgrade, that is, it might be to demand on your “old” PC. This could invariably mean you getting a “newer” PC. Linux has always catered to a variety of PC specifications, no matter how old the system is.

Easierto install

Linuxis easier to install.Unlike window 10, within minutes you can get a fully functional Linuxoperating system with all the basic applications (web browser, office, photo, music, social media, text editor) that an averagecomputer user might need already installed.

Freedomand free of cost

You can download any Linux distribution from the internet for free without paying a dime and install it right away. And Linux respects your freedom.

Iknow change does not come easily, but there’re some very attractiveLinux alternatives you can consider for various uses. They include(but not limited to the) the following:

UBUNTU

ubuntu

DownloadUbuntu.

Linux Mint

linuxmint

DownloadLinuxMint.

Feren OS

ferenos

DownloadFeren OS.

Zorin

zorinos

DownloadZorin.

Elementary OS

elemenatryos

DownloadElementary OS .

it is not ass if when you wake up on Wednesday 15, you would not be able to boot up your Windows 7 PC. It will boot but you are on your own – no SUPPORT or UPDATES. so to be on a safer side, why not move to an OS that protects you while offering you the best computing experience.

HappyLinux’NG!

Windows 10 isn't bloated and doesn't use a lot of hardware resources. It's the best version of Windows ever. Took everything good from windows 7 and improved it. I don't understand why people love windows 7 so fanatically

Yes it is, and way more than Linux, there's even a bunch of services of no use to the desktop user that keeps running on the background making the machine slow and slow, also there's the need of the constant anti virus running, NTFS file system is slower than Linux ext4, and that does not help either, the fact that you can have a Linux installation using just 2 GB of disk and using less than 500MB of RAM tells a lot

Bit of a silly argument.
If someone wants to use Linux they dont need to wait for end of support of win 7 to move.
The bloated things you speak about is also WSL 2.0 that allows you to run linux inside windows without the need for dual boots for example.
Win 10 is by far hundred times more secure then 7 was so its not even a base for comparison.
End of life messages about win 7 have been on for almost 2 + years. If you waited until now to actually act and not use the free license upgrade back when it was relevant, sorry it is kind of your fault. Why on earth would you try to keep win 7 alive until 2023 is beyond me. an OS that almost 11 years old and you want to take it into almost 15 years ?

not silly at all, many organizations are now facing the fact that there no more support and have to chose between moving to Win10 or look for an alternative, Windows 7 was far less invasive, you could even control when to update, go figure. Win10 aparently will even have ads in the menu. Not everyone is fine with that. There are many reasons to dislike Win10 over Win7, so at the EOL, for many is the little push they needed, the last drop.

People didn't have to wait for the EOL of Win7, many of us didn't but for some was an extra motivation.

Finally Win10 doesn't even run in older PCs that ran Win7.

Not silly at all.

First and foremost you're entitled to your opinion.

Win 7 served the purpose for which it was chosen by many businesses.

Win10 is not an alternative to many of such.

Why do you think upgrading to win10 was done for free (at least) by Microsoft?

Nobody wants to pay for it, willingly.

At least Microsoft have realised, to some extent, that they can't make much money from selling win10 directly.

WSL is a life saver for win10.

WSL is not a replacement for Linux, WSL1 disk speed was on par with Windows but lacked a lot of Linux ecosystem commands translation, WSL2 is emulating a Linux Kernel and as such the filesystem is NOT NTFS and so way slower on disk access, that's way WSL2 explorer file integration is made as a netwok shared folder under the hood then there's also the lack of the best Linux goodies like BTRFS snapshots and RAM management that Windows is way way behind Linux Kernel. And for a developer the Linux package manager is a God sent, can't tell the same with WIndows!
