I'm having the same PHP issues with Hostgator. You would think they'd keep up with the standards for the web and something as popular as Wordpress.
You can update the PHP version, but you have to contact support etc. A real hassle!
I've complained about it, support doesn't seem to care. They haven't offered me an alternative package even though I asked specifically about my options. At one point, the rep actually left the conversation!
Honestly, I really wasn't being difficult.
I don't have high expectations, you get what you pay for, but I don't think keeping up with industry standards is a big ask!
