Adding Audio to my blog posts

waylonwalker profile image Waylon Walker Originally published at waylonwalker.com on ・3 min read

This is episode 1 of the Waylon Walker Audio experience, posts fromwaylonwalker.com in audio form.

So I have had this idea for awhile to add audio to my blog posts. The idea partly comes from the aws blog, if you have ever been on their blog you will have noticed that they have a voiced by amazon polly section.

listen to this article on spotify

What to Expect

Honestly I don't know this is all new to me and I dont have much to go off of. For now its a test that may or may not work out.

I will say that the time that I have available for clean audio is a bit limited so expect these to come out in batches as I get time to go back and record.

What Not to Expect

One thing that makes the aws blog really hard to listen to is the robotic voice, I definitely don't want that. This will be voiced by a real human, Me. At the same time written text doesn't translate directly to audio well so don't necessarily expect the audio to be word for word.

Code blocks

There are a lot of code blocks in my blog, which don't translate directly into I will do my best to read short one liners or describe larger blocks, but don't expect a boring three minute read of large code blocks.

Updates

Expect to see these at the top of finished posts once I consider them done. I will not likely come back to edit the audio if there is an edit to the post unless its major. I will do my best to highlight changes in a note next to the embeded audio on the post.

Lets do this

If you like this idea give the posts a listen, share them with your friends, give me a shout out on twitter@_waylonwalker.

I have no idea if I am shooting myself in the foot here, but sometimes I have my hands too busy to read and would love to listen to the author read their post to me,

Hi Waylon,

wow, what a great idea. I like the idea a lot and this makes me think if I should/could add this to my articles too.

I wish you good luck with this experiment and keep me posted, please.

Sure thing, I did a few posts last night, I think they will go quicker than I thought once I am in a rhythm. I will definitely do an update post after doing a few sharing my experience with how it went.

I would love to see more folks do this as well, as I said above I often end up finding a good article that has the answer I need, but limited time to read. I can listen while cooking or cleaning though.

Hey buddy I think this is a cool idea, I actually was thinking about something similar but haven't pulled the trigger because I didn't know how I would do with posts that have code snippets on them.

But like you mentioned, sometimes I don't have the time to sit down and read a post where I could be 'listening to the post' while doing something else. Also, some friends have told me that some audios I've sent them could work for a podcast so I think adding an audio version of posts is definitely good idea.

Looking forward to seeing how it works for you. Keep me posted!

That's awesome! Congratulations!
Sometimes I need audio content to continue learning while I walk or do some other task.
