How much work should take home assignments constitute?

For instance, if you're applying for a backend role, should you be required to build an entire API? Or should you just fix a specific bug? Or add a feature?

Actually, it shouldn't be any of these. Because for the following:

You will need onboarding to the company system to properly work on the task
The scope is bigger than an assignment.
Usually assignments are challenges that show your capability and not to build something to function to their system.
