Friends are (I say) necessary because of not just what they can do for you but what you can do for them. It's nice to be uplifted by a friend, however, if you don't cheer a friend up during a bad day or celebrate with them during the good days, then it is not a friendship, it is just a one sided relationship. Friends are also necessary because of their perspective. If you have a non-developer (or even a developer) friend working with you to test a personal project, they can tell you what is wrong, what needs to be the point of focus, and what you need to do less of.

Friends are important, it is harder to go through life without them.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think life is harder without them. I had no problems in the last 5-6 years. Ofc, I don't know what would be different if I had stronger relationships. It isn't easy. :)
