How upgrading skills could help to retain job after the catastrophe

Quarantine proves to be a tough ask for the highly mobile, active and pulsating world. To be confined to a little space devoid of any fun and movement can be a horrible experience. Besides, remaining idle, just glued the TV, Facebook and other social apps, there are lot of avenues available in the internet and social media to hone our career goals and personality skills which this article tries to emphasize there is gods plenty offered by the companies and institutions of repute for free which can be of a great help for an aspiring candidate to expand his career objective.

Most of us are worried of the boredom, scary news and death toll that keeps rising, the fear of corona kills more than the virus itself. We find people breach the curfew just because they cannot stay put in a place and remain Idle. Yes! It is very difficult period but one should not forget that this quarantine requires us to stay home but not idle since we have to do lots of work to do in a short span of time, be it in academics, projects, marketing etc., after the quarantine. Some prefer or are instructed to work from home, and we find so many memes and funny things in the social media highlighting the inefficacy that happens during work from home schedule. This is mainly due to the lapse in presentation, use of the gadgets effectively, some are totally unaware of the usage of hype since they didn’t realize such technical skills would be handy during complete lockdowns. This lockdown, in a way, is a blessing in disguise for people who were just surviving from home to office viz a viz. to put in layman’s terms – it better you learn a skill using this time. Yes. I too agree it is a great time to binge-watch your favorite serials, eat and sleep or be an epicurean. One should never forget that the other side of this lockdown awaits lots of unfinished work that requires lot of skills and efficiency on the part of the employee to be in the race of sustaining and maintaining a fruitful career.

The quarantine period has brought the whole world topsy -turvy but if you are complacent and lethargic it could be the same for your career too. The fear of corona pandemic has pressed the pause and panic buttons across the world not only for its devasting health related hazard but also for the drastic changes that it would bring in the work paradigm. For People who have lost their hobbies, reading habits, quality time with family, this quarantine period is a blessing in disguise. The flip side of the quarantine can either bring out a lazy, forgetful, unresourceful employee who is going to start his work afresh or a skillful, well-informed and resourceful employee who is going to add value to the company. Who you want to be after this lockdown depends on how you invest your time during this lockdown. Excuses will not build empires. Don’t let the simplicity of a task foo you. Pick up a course and work on it just to keep your brain active and to learn a skill is always an asset. For students, especially the sophomores and seniors, this time can be used to learn lot of courses related to your domain and also to enhance your Resume with these skills which gives you an edge in the job interview.

Only upgraded employees who are ready to take up multi- tasking and the challenge of racing against the clock to bring out the desired results would be entertained in the corporate since they cannot afford to invest more time and money on a slow learner. It is important for us to develop our skills through online training during these holidays for two reasons: First, to keep us in the race by honing our skills mentally and physically .Secondly, it helps us to stay active engaged, motivated and above all, stay out of depression, argument and laziness. There is nothing we gain from being a couch potato but just calories and love handles. "An idle mind is devil's workshop" most of us dwell in our mobile phones which is the best way to kill time but we are oblivious to the fact that we slowly bury the habits of reading, reviewing and developing a new skill or at least renew and brush up our productive and professional skills. Mobile phone provides a wide scope for enriching our personality and skills. Any skill, under the sky, is available on the internet. Besides, movies, serials and other social media apps there are programmes offered by NPTEL, Swayam, Cambridge etc .one can log into language teaching videos in YouTube and learn a new language which gives them a great advantage in their career.

School students can use BYJU app which offered free during this lockdown to enrich their knowledge in their respective subjects. Teachers can upgrade themselves to be techno-savvy by using apps like Google classroom, Zoom and can help students to use the same for submitting assignments and learning the lessons. Most of us are still a green horn in using blogs, micro videos, starting a YouTube channel, even presenting an idea in front of a camera, even struggle to give a self- introduction. This time can be used to work on those skills, and you can rest assured that you would be a changed, equipped individual who would be tailored to meet any challenges in the personal and professional career. The quest to update our knowledge, acquire new skills and develop professional and problem-solving skills is the need of the hour. It is important to have goals in life and it is more important to strive to achieve those goals. The methods to achieve the goals can be changed but not the goals. Let us add more sense and substance to these days and hope we come out safe and sound physically and professionally.Mind you! This is a waiting period not a vacation, so take up some activity, indulge and be an inspiration.
