9 reasons to start a career in tech

You are a student and you’re not quite sure about what to study? Or you want to switch careers, but you don’t know what is the best field to choose? I’ll give you the best reasons to start a career in the tech industry in general, and as a woman in particular.

There are a lot of opportunities

The tech field is in high demand, so you will have a lot of job opportunities. The hardest part might be to land your first job. Once this is done, it’s basically the companies that will come to you and hire your services. My LinkedIn is filled with recruiters' messages, and I’m not even a senior developer with a great portfolio. So imagine how it will be when you gain experience and expertise in the field! Not convinced? Check out my list of recruitment platforms to search for opportunities in tech.

You have the option to work remote

A lot of companies will allow you to work remotely, depending on their policy it can be just a few days a week, or full remote. That’s a great option nowadays with the coronavirus still out there, or even to reduce your transportation time. Besides, if you are full remote, you can code from anywhere! Imagine you want to travel regularly but still be able to work: you just need your computer and an internet connection, and you’re good to go!

Gender disparities : more men than women

Females in tech are significantly underrepresented, the gender gap is still very big in most companies. Thus, there are a lot of opportunities for women to work in tech and add more diversity to companies. Also, by working and evolving in tech as a woman, you will be seen as a role model and encourage more girls to pursue a career in tech.

You can make decent money

Your salary will depend on few factors: the country you work in, your role and your experience. However, tech jobs are in high demand, so the salary is above average in most countries. It is very well paid, especially in the USA, in cities like San Francisco for example. Note that the cost of living in San Francisco is also very high. If you want to learn more about the salaries in tech, check out this list of salary comparators.

Great chance to Freelance

If you always dreamed to work as a freelance and chose your clients, projects, hours… Tech is the best place to start. A lot of companies hire freelance to join their teams. I personally work as a Front-end developer, and some of my colleagues are freelancers. Here is an example of freelance platforms you can use.

It is a rich environment allowing you to learn and evolve

Tech is a booming field, it’s evolving so fast. You can not get bored, you will always learn new things to stay up to date. Also, there are a lot of different roles depending on what you like to do: developer, PO, scrum master, QA tester, architect… You also have the option to evolve through your career. For example, you can start as a developer, then with some years of experience you can be a lead developer, and finally an architect. Note also that the field is so large, you can work in Web development, Data Science, Machine learning, AI, Security, UI/UX design…

An official school degree is not mandatory

If you want to study in college and get an official degree in a tech-related field, you definitely can. I, myself, have a Master degree in Computer Science. However, if you don’t want to go through school again, there are so many opportunities to get trained online or in special schools. A lot of persons working in tech followed a few months Bootcamp, or are self-taught. The most important in tech is not the degree, but your competencies and your capacity to learn and evolve.

Huge active community

The tech community is huge and is very active. That means you will find the support you seek either in person or online. There are a lot of online resources that are updated regularly. There are also a lot of platforms to ask questions. Besides, the mindset in tech is based on solidarity, so you’ll always find someone who will take the time to answer to you and help you out with whatever struggle you’re encountering.

Cool and open-minded mentality

There is a very cool and relaxed atmosphere in tech, at least on the developer side I can definitely tell that people are quite open-minded, you are accepted the way you are. You don't need to dress up in a very formal way, relaxed clothes are the norm. You can come from any country in the world, it doesn't really matter, the most important will always be your competencies. Of courses, it's not a perfect world, there will always be some places where it's not the case, but for the most part it's very diverse and human.
