The gap between Bing and Google is quite narrow. They have engineers cycling between the same set of companies and they're solving the same problems. Each company's approach to how they implemented search varies and that's what distinguishes them from each other.
Google is generally more satisfying because their results are usually more relevant compared to Bing. At the end of the day, you need instant answers and Google does quite well on that. Google had a headstart in Search, so it managed to disrupt the industry and continue to stay on the forefront.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has been playing catchup to Google.
