It's also something that you can build into modern web-apps, as front-end code can detect file support and serve the best, smallest resource to a specific device or browser.

When adding or switching formats, it is important to understand there can be cumulative quality loss from multiple conversions. An image saved as a JPEG will experience some quality loss from the original. Re-saving that same JPEG as a lossy WebP can further reduce the image quality.

Generally when editing images or switching formats it is preferable to start from a high-quality original whenever you can.
