On the Nietzschean Eternal Return of Software

With the lousy title what I meant it is the following situation in software development: Time and time again a technology is considered "dead" or obsolete and then not only it does persist on time but its influence grows. So top of mind I have the following examples:

  • C. Considered dead many many times. Alive and kicking. Same for Unix-flavored OSes.

  • Relational databases. Now Postgresql is more popular and used than never before.

  • Server rendered webpages.

  • Not software related, but still interesting, Vinyl discs.

  • COBOL...joking

I wonder what other examples you have in mind.
