Front-End development vs. UI Design. or are both equally important

One hurdle I have recently come across in my web development career is really defining exactly what I do. What I mean by this is that I have 2 very similar interests, which are designing interfaces from scratch and then developing those designs into feasible front-end websites. As I have been looking for internships and junior roles lately, being a UI designer seems very attractive at this point as my design skills currently surpass my development skills. My question is, would it be better to abandon one at this point and solely focus on the other or should I do both?

Personally, I'm a fan of specializing in something. Imo it's better to be an expert in one discipline, rather than competent in two.

It takes a long time to become skilled at either of those skills, and you may find yourself as a jack of all trades, rather than a master in one.

Hey there!
I have been a web designer and front-end developer for the past 13 years, and I can say this: keep learning both as long as you find them interesting.

I've worked in many companies on both roles, but the combined value of both helped me highlight in those teams. The reason I found is that specialized teams avoid at all cost doing the other areas jobs, and it makes sense as they are not being paid to do the other guys job.

The problem, is that when combined projects needs to be done, they become very loose trying to find the best solution that combine both sides, because no one has the picture from the other side.

In my experience, understanding exactly how the front-end works will allow you to get better solutions for your UI designs and prototypes.
