Supercomputing was introduced in India during the late 1980s, with the establishment of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune. C-DAC was set up as a national initiative to promote the development of supercomputing in the country, with the aim of providing indigenous solutions for scientific and industrial applications.

The first supercomputer developed by C-DAC was the PARAM series, which was designed and developed in collaboration with the US-based Cray Research Inc. The first PARAM supercomputer, PARAM 8000, was commissioned in 1991 and was one of the fastest supercomputers in the world at that time.
