The 2023 State of CSS survey is now open!
Now if you're thinking that it somehow feels like you just filled out last year's survey, don't worry, your mind is not playing tricks on you.
Catching Up With CSS
Although we held last year's edition in October 2022, this year we decided to hold the survey in June.
First of, the State of JavaScript survey takes place in November, so moving up the CSS survey will give each one a bit more breathing room –and help me avoid going crazy these last couple months of the year.
But beyond that, a ton of new CSS features like :has()
, Subgrid, and Container Queries are quickly gaining adoption. Moving up the survey date will let us track that progress at a key moment in CSS's evolution.
This Year's Team
So what else is new this year? First of all, let me introduce this year's lead survey designer, Chen Hui Jing.
Hui Jing has been deeply involved with the CSS community for more than a decade, and is one of the most knowledgeable experts I know on the topic. After crossing paths with her at a conference a few years back, I'm thrilled to finally have a chance to work together!
Introducing the Reading List
There is also new stuff in terms of survey-taking experience. As you go through the survey, you'll have a chance to add items you want to learn more about to your very own personalized “reading list”.
Then, at the end of the survey, you'll get a recap of the list along with links to helpful resources to learn more about each topic - and you can even get that list emailed to you for reference, too!
On the technical side of things, I've also spent the first half of the year doing a big clean-up and rewrite of the entire stack that powers the surveys – hopefully translating into a more stable experience overall, and making it easier to fix any bugs that remain (if you find any please let us know)
Coming Soon: the State of React
But wait, there's more! The goal of this rewrite was to make it much easier to launch additional surveys. And the first on the list is the State of React!
We don't have a date for the survey just yet, but we've started to work on a survey outline and collecting feedback about it. If you're a React user, [let us know what questions] you'd like the survey to answer!
