Got a new job! Spent a month being unemployed, which I feel extremely blessed it wasn't longer. But during that month I found out I'd been taking less than half of what I could have been for a salary, and I hadn't realized how toxic my old job was getting until after I left. They'd just about convinced me that I wasn't cognitively capable of programming at all.

Spent the month submitting applications and contributing to open source to keep my skills sharp, and found that I loved development again, and now I've started this job and I feel passionate about software dev again!

Nice work Mike! Finding a great job can take time, hey. A place where we feel empowered to give it our best.

Contributions to open source really do help web devs stand out. Proves that you can use github on a team and that's a big advantage.

Sounds like it's also helped you with motivation too? How do you think it's helped most?

Absolutely! I've found that it helped me to not only help me stand out in my job search, but it helped prove to myself that I really enjoy writing code. Rust seems to be the language my brain thinks in, so being able to work on rust projects and just see things click into place was a massive first step into rebuilding my confidence.

Now, I'm seeing how the team I'm on work together and really lift each other up, either through directly helping on a story, or just through words of encouragement or expressing appreciation. It's been huge for me to join in on that and see how it boosts morale and motivation.
