Climate Fintech Code Challenge

Ends December 8, 2022

You have the power to change user behavior.

Code something that will bring climate crisis awareness to consumers - How can you monitor and measure impact on our planet?

  • Build better habits
  • Change user behavior

What technologies can you use?

  • AI/ML
  • Big Data
  • Blockchain

How can you bring payments into your architecture?

Let's chat about it.

Do you believe in ice? What about hydrogen bonds? Remember as a kid taking a shovel and digging a hole in the earth and noticing different layers?

I grew up in the southern US and we had nice topsoil in our area, but after a few inches to a foot of digging you would come across other layers of earth - could be sand, might be clay, might be an old baseball my brother buried years before me.

So this is all real right? As developers we love space, which means we typically love science. Scientist have taken core-samples in various types of glaciers all over our round-world and evidence is there that due to humans there are changes and fluctuations in these layers and rings of life. Above us, satellites have collected data that reinforces these findings. Everything is warming up. Oceans, air, rising waters from shrinking glaciers.

I will be the first to admit that I don't do enough to help remind other humans about it - or even remind myself that this shit is going on.

How can I be a better green citizen on this borrowed planet? Don't get me wrong, I make sure lights are off when I leave a room in my house, my family recycles pretty much everything, and we donate gently-used items for others and don't just throw it in the trash. We save water and work to not leave it running when say we are washing something we can't place in the dishwasher and we turn off water between brushing our teeth. Is that really enough? Oh, and I am completely digital so I don't write on paper that often and when I do it shows. I write horribly now. But just because you go digital what is the balance between a tree being saved and my iPhone in a landfill? I am sure there is data out there on that but will save that for another day.

All these environmentally friendly things I mentioned above I do without thinking. Why? Because my entire life I was told by my parents to practice these things. Turn off the light! Quit leaving the water on! 🤔 So why can't we do the same thing for our future selves and generations.

Why not bake into our spending habits a way to see how much damage we are doing to the planet and give a recommendation on how to offset this misdeed. As developers we have the tools and brain to do this. I keep hearing about website performance and environmental impact – this is where we are at today. Where will we be tomorrow?

Looking forward to seeing what you build using something we all do every day (spend money) and help environmental healing.

Warmest Regards (literally),
Drew

P.S. I wonder what an oxford comma relates to in carbon emissions?
